Good morning, bobrjr,
Until I researched your question, I always assumed that candle-makers
just threw a stiff string into melted wax and voila! there was a wick.
Well, I was wrong.
It appears that there are guidelines for wicks and I found a good page
which explains the whole thing in simple terms. The webmaster has
broken the topic down by wick type:
The Essential Survival Guide's definitive guide to wicks
http://www.candlemaking.org.uk/wicks.html
Here's another site that is equally easy to follow, but a bit more
chatty and friendly. You will learn which wicks should be used in
which types of candles, how to (and why you should) prime your wicks,
and about the possible danger of wire core wicks.
