The following web site offers step-by-step recipes to make your own
lye soap. The author also offers a book on the subject but the recipes
on the page are a reasonable starting point even if you don't buy her
book:

Yes, there are many pages that make these claims for lye soap,
especially with regard to poison ivy and chiggers. Here are a few, and
the search technique
that will lead you to many more:

botanicalearth.com, "basic lye soap:"
http://store.botanicalearth.com/basiclyesoap.html

Handmade Natural Soaps, Amonsoquath Tribe of Cherokee:
http://www.amonsoquath.net/store/pages/soap.html

Squire Boone Caverns, Village Activities:
http://www.squireboonecaverns.com/village/main.htm

Search methodology followed:

Google search for "lye soap" "chiggers". I recommend trying the search
in exactly that way, with those two phrases in quotation marks, separated
by a space.
