Question ID: 307717
I bought a .COM domain through Network Solutions, and I now want to
create my website. I want it hosted by these people:
http://www.les-basics-nfrance.com. I have to request my domain be
transferred, and then les-basics-nfrance.com will handle the Internic
part of the process.

It says here: http://www.les-basics-nfrance.com/faqs2.html#1.6 that
I'm supposed to tell my current host that I want it transferred. Is my
current host Network Solutions? I'm sure all I did was buy the domain
- I definitely didn't ask for NS to host anything. When I call up the
web address for my domain, there's a NS page saying the site's under
construction, with lots of advertising and search categories.

The problem is I can't find anywhere on NS's website how I tell them I
want my domain hosted by les-basics-nfrance.com. And I can't ask
les-basics-nfrance.com because they don't offer support, which is why
they're so cheap, like me :)

If some of this doesn't make sense, it's because I don't understand
these things. Sorry. Please bear with me :)

Subject should of course be 'Domain Transfer', not 'Doamin Transfer'. :)

Hi jane_wed88,

As a professional in the web hosting industry, I'd be glad to help you
with your question. Believe it or not, your question is one of the
most frequent our support team receives, so obviously one of the most
misunderstood/confusing processes.

As you indicated, you have only purchased a domain name from Network
Solutions. Network Solution would be called your REGISTRAR. Your
registrar is not your web host. (Network Solutions puts a placeholder
page, usually the under construction page with advertising until you
change the information described below.) Since you currently have no
web host, you do not need to transfer anything. What you do need to
do, is register with Network Solutions, the NAMESERVERS for your new
web host. Most nameservers generally start with an 'ns' or 'ns1' or
'ns2' and so on.

Step-by-step Instructions:

1) You need to find out what then nameservers for your new host are.
2) Login to your Network Solutions Account - http://www.networksolutions.com/
3) Once you are logged in, put a check-mark by the domain you want to
edit, and click the button that says "Edit DNS"
4) Follow the links and put your nameserver info in the corresponding
fields and submit the changes.

The next thing you need to understand, is that once you make the DNS
change, the change will not go into effect for approximately 72 hours.
This is called propogation time, however, I have found it usually
only takes 36-48 hours. During the wait time however, you can upload
your files to your new webhost. Once the propogation is complete,
when you type in your new domain name in a web browser, you will be
taken to your website.

I hope you have found this answer helpful, please don't hesitate to
request clarification for anything that is unclear.

Kindest regards,
