I have, now... :)
But seriously, my experience with shopping questions has led
me to be cautious with regard to the assumption that the
customer has included, or I have accurately interpreted, every
requirement within the original question. Quite often,
additional specifications come to light in the course of
asking for clarification, so I have found it wise to do so.
Also, for the price you posted, I wanted to flesh out the
answer a bit.
I will formalize my answer by adding it here in the answer box:

Are you familiar with Alienware? They refer to themselves as
"The Best Custom Built Gaming PC for the Ultimate PC Gamer!",
and have the awards to back it up:
"Winner of the BEST PERFORMANCE NOTEBOOK and BEST PERFORMANCE
DESKTOP awards by the readers of Computer Shopper."
"01.07.2004 Alienware Wins PC Gamer Editors' Choice Award"
"Alienware systems outperformed the Power Mac G5 systems in
six out of seven head-to-head comparisons, including tests
using Adobe Premiere, MP3-encoding, Microsoft Word, and
Quake III. Mac World opined, 'The PCs beat the Macs soundly.'"
"11.07.2003 Alienware Chosen as "Top Entertainment PC" and
Wins The PC World Editors' Pick Award!"
...and more on this page:

Custom selection of the quality of your personalized desktop
system starts with a choice of Pentium or AMD on this page:
http://www.alienware.com/gaming_main_desktop.aspx
The page following that choice allows you to select from the
level of performance vs price that you would prefer, and to
further customize the system to your specifications.
Your custom-built system is benchmarked and fine-tuned for
performance before it arrives at your home, and the level
of support offered by the Aliencare Advanced Technical
Support is also the recipient of awards from many sites.

I was aware of this company and its products from having
researched systems in the past for the sake of choosing
my own, so my search strategy was simply to look up
'Alienware' using Google.
As you may have already determined from looking over the
site links I gave you, their best-performing Pentium package
is the Area 51 Extreme. The included hardware is listed
on this page, and you can upgrade or downgrade the components
to further customize your system:
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/area-51.aspx?SysCode=PC-AREA51&SubCode=SKU-EXTREME
The best-performing AMD package is the Aurora Extreme, and
you can further customize that system from this page:
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/aurora_fx.aspx?SysCode=PC-AURORAFX&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
Notice the link on both of these pages which says "Test
this system's performance". If you click on this, it will
install an application which will contrast either systems'
performance against your current system. In doing so, I
found that the AMD system, though less expensive, offered
a greater percentage of improvement over my current system
than did the Intel Pentium system. Your mileage may vary,
but it may help you decide which system to go with.
You can review the ratings for this company starting from
this page on ResellerRatings.com. Negative ratings seem to
stem from how long it takes the company to deliver the
product, though this seems to vary with the individual.
I couldn't find any negative reviews for the system itself:

And, in a late-breaking news story from Reuters.com
featured on ZDNet.com, Alienware has been chosen to build
a supercomputer for Florida International University:
"Alienware, a privately held computer maker best known for
its high-end PCs for video gamers, has signed a deal to
build a powerful research computer for Florida International
University."

There is no doubt in my mind that your friend will be
completely thrilled to be the recipient of one of these
systems. They are lucky to have you as a friend!
