Question ID: 307991
I am trying to find statistics regarding people who leave the military
and find employment elsewhere. Specifically, I'd like to have a
statistical breakdown of the industries they enter. The ideal answer
would look something like:

20% Restaurant owners
13% Professional hockey players
67% Politicians

Of course, the ideal answer would be accurate and backed up with a
link, preferably to a government website, though this is not necessary
as long as the site seems credible, with a chart containing this
information.

Thank you!

Dear jzorn33,

I located a table at the U.S. Department of Labor website which may
meet your requirements.

"Employed men 18 years and over by occupation, veteran status, and
period of service"
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/vet.t03.htm

If this information is useful for you, I will gladly post it as the
official answer to your question.

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Bobbie,

You're on the right track, and impressively quick! It would be
helpful, however, if you could find something a bit more specific,
particularly within that largest category, "Managerial and
professional specialty." 30% of all veterans seem to work within that
category, but that doesn't give me much of a sense of what they're
doing. Are they working predominantly for defense contractors? As
engineers?

Thanks!

Hi jzorn33,

I found an interestng article dated January 14, 2004.

Federal Hiring Of Nation's Military Veterans Increases

"According to the OPM report, 47,510 veterans were hired
government-wide in fiscal 2002, compared to 39,874 hired the year
before, representing a 19.2 percent increase.

About one out of 10 veterans hired in government during fiscal 2002
worked in professional occupations, the report noted, while 25.8
percent of new veteran hires worked in administrative jobs and 19
percent took blue-collar jobs."

Does this help?

Thanks,
