Hello plymouth-ga,

I?ve found a larger version of the painting identified by
throatwobbler-ga but I?m not sure it?s the one you?re looking for.
It?s title is "Madonna del Soccorso" but the painter is shown as
Francesco Melanzio. If this is indeed the painting you?re looking
for, I?ll be happy to post the link to the larger version.

If this is not the painting you?re looking for, please give me any
additional information you have to help me find it. I?ve found many
other paintings of the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Help and Our
Lady of Perpetual Help) but none painted by Tiberio d'Assisi / Ranieri
di Diotallevi.

I look forward to your clarification.

The spelling of the artist and the painting are correct. I believe
Tiberio was an Umbrian fresco painter. I will not know the exact piece
I am looking for unless I see it.

The one in my mind portrays the devil tugging at a child's clothing,
as if to lure him/her away from the Madonna. A moving piece of artwork
on close examination. How many pictures in the early 1500's could fit
this detailed discription? If there are 1/2 dozen or so could you lead
me to a website/library reference book that would contain such
paintings. If not please send the link that will allow me to view the
painting you have in mind.

Thank you very much for your research.

Hello again plymouth-ga,

Thank you for your clarification. I?ll be happy to keep trying to find
you the painting you?re looking for.

The ?Madonna del Soccorso? or ?Our Lady of Help? is a popular
representation of the Virgin in Catholic tradition. I?ve found several
paintings that match your description of ?the devil tugging at a
child's clothing, as if to lure him/her away from the Madonna.? The
problem is that none of them are by Tiberio d'Assisi / Ranieri di
Diotallevi. Let me share what I?ve found and see where we get.

Below I?ve listed the paintings I've located in the order that I think
they are the likeliest match to what you?re looking for. Please let me
know if any of these are the painting you?re trying to find and
provide you with the answer you?re looking for. If not, I hope that
you can give me additional information to continue the quest.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Francesco Melanzio
Madonna del Soccorso

***** This is the ?Madonna del Soccorso? or "Our Lady of Help" that
you describe but it?s painted by Francesco Melanzio. I believe the
Italian commentary explains that it?s similar to a painting attributed
to Tiberio d'Assisi.

dell?Alunno, oreficerie, arredi e manufatti tessili.

***** The painting is in the Municipal Museum of Montefalco which is
also associated with the Museum of Saint Francis in Montefalco. This
museum houses paintings and frescos by Tiberio d?Assisi as well.

VIRGIN MOST POWERFUL:
Catholic Belief in Mary's Strength

Our Lady of Help by Giovanni da Monte Rubiano.
The inhabitants of the Sicilian town of Caltavulturo venerate the
Madonna as their patroness under the title Our Lady of Help. The
traditional image associated with this title is rather intriguing, for
Mary is portrayed holding a club in her upraised right hand which she
uses to drive away enemies who threaten her children! Those "enemies"
could be natural ones, such as invaders seeking to attack the town, or
spiritual enemies, as depicted in the painting on the left.

***** This is another ?Madonna del Soccorso? and the subjects depicted
are very similar to the painting by Francesco Melanzio I listed above.

Assisi, Tiberio (Ranieri di Diotallevi) d?
(b Assisi, ?1460?70; d Assisi, before Oct 1524). Italian painter. He
possibly received his early training from L?Ingegno [Andrea Alovigi
d?Assisi] (c. 1470?1516). It is very probable that Tiberio
subsequently joined the shop of Pinturicchio and accompanied him to
Rome to work in S Maria del Popolo (1485?9) and on the Borgia
apartments in the Vatican Palace (1492?c. 1495). In 1492?3 Tiberio was
paid by the Comune of Assisi for various works, and in 1495 he was
employed in Perugia Cathedral.

These results are all very good and depict the Madonna del Soccorso in
the correct pose. However, still not THE ONE I was in search of. Could
you possibly send photos of any/all poses of the Madonna "del
Soccorso" that you can think of +/- 100 years of this artist?

Thank you,

Paul

Hello again plymouth-ga,

I'm afraid I've reached the end of the road on this search. I've spent
a couple of hours to find you the resources I've posted and I've
exhausted all my leads for images online of the "Madonna del
Soccorso". It may be necessary to look for offline sources. Maybe
another researcher will be able to help.

All the best.

I think it hangs in the Civic Museum, Montefalco in Italy. Painted in 1505 or 6.
