I?m moving from California to Florida, and I understand that I?ll need
to obtain a Florida Drivers license. Since I have a sterling 20 year
record of no tickets or violations on my California License, I want to
know if my clean record will be transferred to my Florida license. I
know there is a Drivers License Compact that ensures your bad record
doesn?t go unnoticed in another state, but I want the benefits (i.e.
lower insurance rates) of a good record. I'd hate for a Insurance or
Rental Car company to think that I'm a new driver based on checking my
Florida license.

The best advice for you is to suggest that you go to your local DMV
office and request/purchase a copy of your driving record, then
contact your insurer and ask them for a letter of claim history. With
those two documents in your possession, you should not have any
problems obtaining a good discount. In some cases, you may need to ask
your California insurer to fax the letter of claim history to your
prospective Florida insurer, but that's standard practice for the
insurance companies anyway.

All that said, what would you consider an acceptable Answer to your
Question? Generally, the individual states will only list your driving
record for the period of time that they have been the issuer of your
license; they rely on each other to do their own part in maintaining
the 'total' picture of your driving history.

Incidentally, if you are able to remain with your current insurance
company through this move, it will make things even easier for you.

Unfortunately I've had several different insurers due to being in the
military, and serving in multiple US / overseas locations. I'm
overseas at the present, and while I can get a letter from the
insurer, my Calif license hasn't changed and it reflects a good record
that I want preserved when I leave the military and move to Florida.
My question is whether or not the Florida DMV will preserve that
record.
