Question ID: 308368
Plastic injection molding is accomplished by melting plastic beads or
pellets in a heated chamber and injecting the semi-fluid plastic into
a steel mold. Plastic of all different types is bought and sold in
large quantities, but always in the form of pellets that are 1/16 to
3/16 inch across. There must be a secondary market for 10- 25 pound
quantities of these materials. I need a supplier of small quantities
of glass filled nylon. Any grade of GF nylon will do.

I have located one company that will sell a 33% glass filled nylon
resin in a minimum 55# bag for a ballpark price of $2.35 per pound. Is
this a possibility. Also,I just got an e-mail response from a company
that says they can help and they ask these questions:
(1) Do you require virgin or recycled.
(2) Do you require natural or black.
If you will answer their question, I will investigate further.

Glass filled nylon in natural or black is acceptable though my first
choice is natural. Recycled plastics are quite often 100% recycled
and are generally mixed with virgin materials, perhaps at the rate of
25% recycled and 75% virgin. It may be that this is what they mean
when they say it is recycled.
55 pounds of resin is a lot although $2.35/ pound for that quantity
is a good price. The stuff can be hard to get rid of as most states
don't allow plastic beads to be put into the trash. That's what will
happen a year or two from now when this project runs its course.
Isn't there a market out there like www.machinist-materials.com (for
bars of material) or e-bay that specializes in left over lots of
moldable resins. There are other materials i am interested in but
finding a source for small quantities of GF nylon alone would be
sufficient for now.

Mr. pgruendeman, the glass filled nylon that you require can be
purchased from K-Mac Plastics ( http://k-mac-plastics.com/ ). I
received the following e-mail from Keith Gillion :

Virgin Black 13% Glass Filled 25 lbs is $1.75/lb + applicable ups costs.
We also have a 33% recycled regrind that is a darker natural tint.
This is .60/lb + applicable UPS charges, 25 lb min.

I have his e-mail, but it is from his personal account and I can't
give you that. However, the original message I sent went to
info@k-mac-plastics.com . I am certain with this info you will have no
problem contacting K-Mac.

Two other companies that can supply glass filled nylon in 55# minimums are:
(1) LNP (800)854-8774 Janice
(2) Performance (800)244-7659 Phyllis
    33% @ $2.35 per pound

Good luck with your molding,
