tried 555.555.5555 & 555-555-5555,  at which point I thought it would
be prudent to ask --  what would you recommend?

Well, if Google has a record of the number you're entering,
555-555-5555 or 5555555555 should work.

If Google doesn't have any record of the number, nothing will turn up.
Let me know if you would like information of other non-Google online
phone number searches to help you, as an answer.
