Dear Billroberts,

Hello! Thank you for your inquiry!

Here is a list of 10 premier division soccer club and/or stadium names that are
humorous either due to their pronunciation, geographic location, random
correlations, or how the name translates:

1. Sapporo Dome – Japan
Sapporo is Japan’s metropolis in the north, a dynamic young city that is the
capital of what is often called Japan’s last frontier: the island of Hokkaido.
The Sapporo Dome was a World Cup 2002 stadium. Sapporo is also the name of
Japan's number one exported… beer!

2. Jeju World Cup Stadium – Korea
Over 3.7 million tourists visit the island every year, but not because of it's
world renowned soccer stadium, but because it's one of the honeymoon capitals
in Asia.

3. Ibaraki Prefectural Kashima Soccer Stadium – Japan
Just the name of the stadium alone is funny. This stadium was also a 2002
World Cup stadium. Even funnier is standing at the stadium entrance is a
statue of Kashima’s most favorite footballer: the Brazilian star Zico, who
brought his playing and coaching skills to the town, inspired renewed
enthusiasm among a new generation of young fans, and helped the Antlers become
J.League champions. Go ANTLERS!!!!

4. One of the new stadium names currently under consideration by the Dallas
Burn (Major League Soccer – US) is The Kiln. (Apparently the Brickyard has
already been taken??)

5. Newell's Old Boys – Argentina
Stadium in Rosario, Argentina, for their professional team, Newell's Old Boys.

6. In Cordoba, Argentina, the professional team, Belgrano, plays in the
stadium named, "Gigante de Alberdi", which translates to "The Giant of Alberdi".

7. Columbia's premier league soccer team, Once Caldes, play in the national
stadium, "Palogrande", which in English literally means "big stick".

8. When visiting Montevideo, Uruguay, be sure to check out one of their
premier soccer games at "La Bombonera" stadium – in English – "The Chocolate
Box". Home of club Basanez.

9. Next time your in Algeria, don't get to intimidated by one of their most
liked professional soccer team, "Mascara".

10. Believe it or not, in Ethiopia one of the top five professional soccer
clubs name is "Ethiopian Coffee".

N° 8 is wrong!!! "La Bombonera" is located in Buenos Aires, not in
Montevideo!
This name is due to the steep tribunes ("Bombonera" is a chocolate
box)that sometimes cause human "avalanches"!
