Hello Jacques,
The George Washington Goethals was a ?liberty ship? designed for
emergency construction during WWII. Here is an article on Liberty
Ships from the United States Maritime Museum:
http://www.usmm.org/libertyships.html
And another from Carnegie Mellon:
http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/%7Ept/liberty/photos/liberty_summary.html
Apparently, she was in service until the 1960s. Here is a detailed
history from NavyHistory.com:
http://www.navyhistory.com/ap/George%20W.%20Goethals.html
I was also able to find some vital statistics:
Launched on Dec 2, 1942
Standard Liberty vessel type Z-EC2-S-C1
Other stats can be found at the Carnegie Mellon University website:
http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/%7Ept/liberty/liberty_listG.html
These records were put together from Historian's Collection, Records
of the United States Maritime Commission, at the National Archives.
(Interesting to note, some of these statistics differ with
Navyhistory.com ? such as the shipyard)
She is not included on a list of ships sunk or damaged in WWII
according to the US Merchant Marines:
http://www.usmm.org/shipsunkdamaged.html
Lastly, here is some information on the man who inspired the name,
from Philately (a stamp collection site):
http://www.philately.com/philately/biogogo.htm
(scroll down to ?Goethals?)
