What are the top 10 product categories sold via the Internet ranked by
annual US dollar sales?  Include the sales figures.  Examples of
product categories are books, cars, chocolate, flowers, etc.  Include
only the portion of sales directly attributable to the Internet. 
Provide at least three example websites for each of the 10 product
categories.  Provide links to the key research documents used.

 The following references provide the top online spending categories
in U.S. dollars.

 The most up-to-date statistics for category sales over an entire year
are compiled by the US Census Bureau. Their yearly data goes through
2001. I have reproduced the 2001 and 2000 figures below and
reorganized the list according to category sales volume from highest
to lowest. I have excluded two of the categories which rank in the top
ten, labeled "other merchandise" and "nonmerchandise receipts",
because they are extremely broad in scope. However, you may choose to
include them in your list even though they include a broad range of
diverse products under one category.
