I would like information on a Japanese water color master artist born
around 1880 by the name of Tanauchi or Tanu?chj. His water color
paintings were sold in Japan. His students used his name but added an
initial in front of his name. I purchased his pictues in Tokyo in
1955 and was told that the artist was an old man and didn't paint much
any more, so I figure he was born around the year I listed abv. I'd
like to find information about him, a list of his works and their
value(s.

witchdoctor,

I believe the person you are referring to is Rokuro Taniuchi. You can
see some of his artwork and see if this resembles the type you know
about here:

http://www.city.yokosuka.kanagawa.jp/e/muse_e/taniuchi/

Detailed information on him is only found on the Japanese sites. If
you can confirm that this is the person you are looking for, I will
answer with the information.

The name of the artist could be Tananchin or Taranchin. The last
letter has a swirl which look like a "Y". Again, he was reported to
be a very famous water color artist that painted pictures of "old"
Japanese life. Scenes depict rural life as well as fishing boats.
Colors are muted. A Japinese friend's parents stated that this artist
was very famous and that he depicted Japan life as it was a hundred
years ago, viz, turn of the century.

I hope this helps.
