Hello jcarleton,

Thank you for your question.

Windows Update currently checks to be sure that you have the latest
software installed on your machine before it will check to see what
new updates are available for you. Simply visit this page and you will
be given the opportunity to download and install V4 if it is no longer
on your drive:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

it will redirect to here

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Either url should accomplish your goal of reinstalling the update software.

Search Strategy:

windows update

I trust my research has provided you with the answer you need to
reinstall your Windows Update software and briung your computer
current with patches and updates. If a link above should fail to work
or anything require further explanation or research, please do post a
Request for Clarification prior to rating the answer and closing the
question and I will be pleased to assist further.

Hi again,

Perhaps I was unclear.

When you visit the Windows Update site at the urls above, it will
first check to see if you have the latest version (V4) of Windows
Update installed. If not, as you say, it will install this for you
from the site before checking to see what updates are available to be
loaded. So, this should restore your Windows Update capability.

Have you tried this? Is there something more I am missing in your
question? Please let me know.
