Hello Chris 7272, As you can imagine the American public was extremely outraged when the truth about the Tuskegee study came to light. Although the medical community had been aware of it all along, the public as a whole learned of the study from a 1972 article in the New York Times. The NAACP filed a lawsuit, which ended in a $9 million settlement for the study participants. Eventually, a special government program was established for the care and benefit of study participants. The Tuskegee Health Benefit Program is administered by the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/od/tuskegee/index.html The CDC has a useful timeline of events surrounding the study here: http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/od/tuskegee/time.htm Eventually, the fallout from this study resulted in fundamental changes in the rules surrounding health research on human subjects. The CDC explains this here: http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/od/tuskegee/after.htm The final report of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study Legacy Committee is available from the UVA Medical School library: http://www.med.virginia.edu/hs-library/historical/apology/report.html This information is just the tip of the iceburg. If there is more you would like to know about any particular aspect of this please feel free to request clarification. I have enjoyed helping you with this question, Majortom ________________ To find this answer I searched google for Tuskegee+Study ________________ |
