Here you'll find the quote attributed to H.W. Shaw:
"h.w. shaw
I have seen hypocrisy that was so artful that it was good judgement to
be deceived by it."

However, the same quote is attributed to Josh Billings in a book
entitled "Webster's Dictionary of Quotations," by Michael Strumpf.

The answer to this conundrum: Josh Billings and Henry Wheeler Shaw
were the same person. Shaw, using the name "Josh Billings," performed
sort of a standup comedy act in the 19th Century. He was one of the
most popular humorists of his time, and is often compared to Mark
Twain and Will Rogers.
"Josh Billings is the pen name of Henry Wheeler Shaw, born in
Lanesboro, Massachusetts April 12, 1818. He was the son and grandson
of US Congressmen. His father, Henry Shaw, also served in the
Massachusetts State Senate for 25 years. A renowned humorist, in his
day Billings was better known and appreciated than his contemporary,
Mark Twain.
Commanding capacity crowds wherever he performed, he became widely
known for his down-home philosophies, Yankee 'one-liners' and peculiar
phonetic spelling."

My very favorite Josh Billings quote is "As scarce as truth is, the
supply has always been in excess of the demand." Some things never
change. ;-)
