for original question)
I am trying to find software for ongoing management of one's career.
There are many books, websites and private counsellors who do this but
I am seeking a single software tool to try and integrate/automate this
as much as possible, do regular checkups of progress etc.
I'd prefer the answer to address my original question below, but I'll
accept an answer that is a comparision of other similar software (e.g.
personal organiser/goals software.)
In my searching I found:
* Career exploration - Database of careers, often with some basic
preference testing. Software typically aimed at school/university
career libraries; there are also web based solutions both free and
paid.
* IQ/Aptitude/personality tests. Usually aimed as assisting tools for
careers counsellors.
* Resume software - there are at least a dozen of these and they are
easy to find. Some include basic career exploration, career tips.
Aimed at job seekers.
* Goals software - These are probably most suited to ongoing
management of a career. They help you set goals and measure progress
towards them; though none I have found are specifically for careers.
* HR software - there are many types of HR software but none are
applicable to individual use.
* Other - A handful of software aimed at managing a pay rise and a career planner

ORIGINAL QUESTION FOLLOWS:
----------------------
I am trying to find software to help in all facets of the ongoing
management of one's career
I've been to several advisers over the years but have never felt like
the results have been particularly useful. All the tests I've done
seem a bit "one dimensional" as they tell me I should be an
engineer/technician/computer type person. They don't identify other
possible options that may interest me such as a real estate valuer
etc.
There are hundreds of books and websites about this but I want to
'bring it all together' into a single software tool.
I don't know if it exists, but it would seem like a product with quite wide appeal.
What I want:
* Software principally intended for ongoing management of one's
career, but also suited to general career exploration.
* A 'step by step' approach whereby the software leads you through the
process, and automates as much as possible.
* Extensive testing such as Personality type/preferred style of work/IQ etc.
* A rating system to list suitable careers, including 'thinking
laterally' about other options.
* A 'reality check' to gauge how easy/hard it would be to change to another career.
* A rating of long-term outlook for different careers and industries.
* An overall ranking of options and able to print reports of the
testing, career options
* Ongoing maintenance of career using all of the above, plus goal
setting and measurement regarding training, promotion etc such that
one remains relevant and employable on favourable terms.
* Perhaps a weekly or monthly review to quantify progress towards the goals.
* Some of the organiser/salesman type tools do part of what I mean in
terms of goal setting.
* Cost: $US100-200. Will pay up to $US500 or more for an exceptional product.
What I don't want:
* Book or Web based solution, unless it is very comprehensive.
* Software aimed at secondary school age people making first career decisions.
* Limited scope tools intended for use with a careers advisor. (e.g.
personality types or just a database of job descriptions)
* One of the plethora of crappy 'resume builder' or 'job hunting' software
* Suggestions to use the Sims
Please only answer if you can find something that is an integrated
solution matching most of my requirements or the 'spirit' of the
question. I don't want books or web based services unless they are
particularly good.
Thanks. |
