My chip on my windshield problem I got a chip on my windshield when a construction truck was driving ahead of me on the freeway. I went to an auto window shop to get it fixed, but they wouldn?t touch it. They said because it is in the drivers area, some law prevented them from fixing the chip, and they could only sell me a whole new windshield for hundreds of $$. Is there a product I can mail order that will fix a simple chip without ruining my windshield? Is there another solution? thanx in advnce, |

sherpaj-ga: The windshield shop is correct in that they are not permitted to repair a chip if the subsequent repair would be within the driver's field of view while operating the vehicle. The reason is to prevent the repaired chip from impairing your vision. It is up to you whether or not you wish to take the risk and try to repair it yourself. Depending on the vehicle inspection requirements in your area, a repaired chip in the driver's field of vision can be enough to cause your car to not receive an inspection certificate, if there is a certificate requirement for you. Repair kits abound on the Internet. Here is a typical one: http://www.thegsmstore.net/sc-auto1.htm (scroll down to the Pitstop Windshield Repair Kit for $12.95 plus S/H) Here are the product details (but ordering can only be done from the previous link): http://www.thegsmstore.net/bg-pitstop1.htm The same kit is available for two dollars more here: http://www.tornado-fuelsaver.tv/products.asp?product_id=MPITSTOP01&CAT= As the instructions that come with the kit will tell you, repair kits can only repair chips up to a certain size. If the chip extends beyond the suction cup that comes with the kit, then it cannot be safely repaired. Good luck! aht-ga Google Answers Researcher |

Check your insurance policy. Mine pays 100% of windshield replacements, with no put-of-pocket costs to me. (I was very surprised). I had driven with a large crack until someone suggested I check my car insurance. I was pleasantly surprised! |
