Hello!
I have had this problem for about six monthes or so now. I use to read
websites in cyrillic and eveything worked fine, untill.. I started to
get the strange
characters instead of normal text at some Russian websites I
could view completely normal earlier. I do not know exactly of what
could have triggered this odd browser behavior. The cyrillic text
affected appear either in bold or in the headings. The rest of the
body text, oddly enough, is always displayed correctly. It is also
strange that not all of the Russian websites are affected - the
popular http://www.lenta.ru/ are displayed as usual, and both bold and
heading text appear correctly. At others, however, such as
http://www.newsru.com/ , the heading text is distorted and unreadable.
The problem affects only IE 6.0 and Opera 7.1, while I can view
everything correctly with Netscape. This is very strange, and what is
more weard, while I try to copy a heading with characters and
paste it, either to Word or the searchbox, it appears 100% normal! I
have tried to change all of the font settings available, update
browser versions, with no result. Only Netscape seem to work
faultless. I know that this is not a problem with a website, but
solely with my browsers. I have added a good example on what exactly
is happening on my website:

I hope there is a solution for this problem! |

Hello Livioflores,
Many thanks for the link but alas, I`ve tried all of the instructions
and suggestions provided there with no result. It seem that everything
is pretty much ok with my cyrillic settings, and I was even able to
view the two test pages written in two different cyrillic fonts 100%
correctly. As it is, it doesn`t seem to be any problem with the text
recognition itself. It just that these stupid characters (00000) pop
up at some websites I could view properly before, and I checked these
sites from public computers and they all worked fine! I don`t know,
but could it be a virus or something? It is very odd, and I`ve never
seen anything like it. I had font troubles before, but was able to
resolve these simply by experimenting with the browser font settings.
This time, however, nothing seem to help. Why can I view one part of
the text while not the other, such as a heading, on the same page? Why
is it possible to view these headings correctly with Netscape but not
Opera and EI? One would assume that if there is a problem with the
font settings, then /all/ of the text should appear distorted on the
given page, not only some parts of it! As you can see on the link on
my page, most of the text appear correct except the headings. These
same headings appear totally correct in Netscape, and in IE at some
public computers I`ve tried. Also, when I save the distorted page,
such as http://www.newsru.com/ to my HD and view it, it appear
correctly - but not online!!
Any suggestions?
PS: Perhaps it could be of some help to say that I have no problems
with the headings at http://www.lenta.ru/, while the headings appear
distorted at
http://www.newsru.com/. Maybe by checking the font settings and
analyzing the structure of these websites could give a clue here? Both
of them use windows (cyrillic) 1251 encoding.
