Ok, I have searched google and tried countless downloads of movie editors. I've seen it done, so I know it can be done, but no one I've asked knows how yet. All I want to do, is take an .avi or .mov file and extract scenes to save as jpegs. Please, tell me how! | |

Not to be horribly pedantic, but the simplest solution would seem (to me) to simply alt-enter your screen into full screen mode, and use "Print Screen" to save a frame into memory. Alt-tab back, copy it into Photoshop, or even Paint, and you should have a single creen shot. Obviously, there are much more complicated solutions available, but many are packaged with extremely high-priced editing equipment, and would be unnecessary for single frames of videos that you wanted saved. |

Hello, thanks for your question! I found the answer for your question but I'm not a researcher yet, so I'm posting it like a comment. I don't know why this way of capturing frames isn't spread over the different video editing software, because is a really big problem of space trying to save a whole movie in BMP format (this format has no compression), the JPEG format is a lot more efficient in space, it is a loosy compression format but with a good quality only a few people can tell the difference between a JPEG image and the same BMP image. Anyway, there is a FREE video editing software that can do this conversion. The program I'm talking about is "TMPGEnc", it is a very powerful video editing-encoding tool with a lot of extra functions, like a very good de-interlace system. TMPGEnc home page: http://www.tmpgenc.net Before you download this program I recommend you to read the License agreement. Because if you are going to use this program for commercial use, you should purchase the "TMPGEnc Plus". http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_license.html The download (1030Kb) page of TMPGEnc is: http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_download.html After you download the software you only have to unzip it (http://www.winzip.com) and run the "TMPGEnc.exe" file, no setup needed. How to Get The image Sequence: When you run the program it shows you a wizard, you should close it if you only want to capture stills. In the main window in the bottom part you will find a label saying "Video Source" there you have to push the "Browse" button, and select the video file you want to use. Then if you want to select some scenes you have to press the "Settings" button in the bottom right. There you select the "Advanced" tab, and double click over the "Source Range" option, then the Source Range window will open, you have to select the range of frames that you want, then press "Ok" and "Ok" again. Now you are ready to save the frames, go to "File" menu and select "Output to file" and there select "Sequence...". Then select the folder you want to save the image files, select the format (JPG of course :-) ) and then select the quality you want. Now press "Save"! If you want to save all the frames in the movie you can go directly to the file menu and ignore the settings part. I didn't do any search for this answer because I had used this program and I knew about this feature. I'll look for other programs that have this function, and if I found another don't doubt I will contact you. I hope this information help you. If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask me. It would be nice if I see a comment from you telling me if I was helpful or wrong or whatever. Thanks again for asking. |

Hi secretagentwoman, I have found a program called Video Framer 1.06. It has the ability to export any file; .avi and .mov and save desired frames and export them into a .jpeg. Also it gives you the ability to export them into .avi, RealMedia, QuickTime, Windows Media, and other picture files. It also allows you to create video files via a digital camera or a video camera you have that will allow you to hook it up to your computer. The Software is available at CNet's download area: http://download.com.com/3000-2194-10114774.html?tag=lst-0-2 Additional Links: Other links you can try is Cnet's list of software: http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=avi+editor&tg=dl-2001 Search Strategy: Keyword: "avi editor" on CNet's Download Area |

If you had already tried the method of using the [Print Screen] button to capture a bitmap, then pasting it into an app such as PhotoShop, you may have run into the problem of direct video output. On most new cards the video data is sent straight to the video card, skipping the handling by Windows. This allows the video card to scale the image to full screen using the hardware on the video card, but it also means that it is not part of the Windows/Linux/Mac desktop, and you can't take a screenshot of it with [Print Screen]. If this happens, you can try selecting software mode/unaccelerated video output in you video player (such as Windows Media Player). |

Hello secretagentwoman, you should really try out this terrific image viewer: it's called IrfanView, available for free and does exactly what you want, without needing to download large software packages. As the procedure suggest, you can also view movie files with it and at any given time make a screenshot. Give it a try and tell me if it worked! http://www.irfanview.com/english.htm Best regards, searchbot-ga |
