I am interested in finding some info on the philanthropic side to
Hershey foods and chocolate. I have heard that in the 1800's they set
up a village for there workers. I would like some info on this and
more evidence of their corporate philanthropy.

I am already familiar with the Quakers, but if you could find other
businesses/oragnizations which have had a strong philanthropic side to
them for many years, I would certainly be interested.

Thanks

Hi will_fawcett-ga!

Do you mean that aside from the Hershey's philantrophy story, you also
want similar stories from other companies?

Thanks!

Furthermore, if the stories came from the company's website will that
be fine for you as well?

Thanks!

I want the focus to be on Hershey, but further companies with similar
philanthropic stories would definitely be interesting - though not
Quaker related. Company website is ok but I would like information
beyond this as well. Max 33% from company website.

Thanks.

Hmmm... I was able to find articles about the village Hersheys for his
workers. Plus additional tidbits of other philantrophic activities. I
cannot find other companies with such dramatic philantrophic stories.
Plus most of the articles come from the websites of such companies.
Will the ones I found for Hersheys be enough as an answer?

Thanks!

That will be ok for $10 if that's ok for you. It will not let me
change the amount now because it says you are answering it...

I will unlock this question right now so that another researcher might
be able to take a crack at it at the present price ($15) you are
offering. He or she might have a better answer.

Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for giving me an opportunity to answer the question.

I have found the following articles discussing the early philanthropic
activities of Hershey?s Corporation.

?Hershey built a chocolate factory in Hershey, Pa, at the conclusion
of his experiments. It was an immediate success. He also included
homes for his workers in the surrounding town, a transport system, aid
for schools and specialized doctors. Working for him was a dream job
in early America. Eventually, his vision expanded to build a park for
the town, a place which soon became the famous Hershey Park.?

?Hershey's philanthropy became the center of his life after the
creation of the park. He opened a school for orphan boys that received
great acclaim. Finally, he left his entire legacy to the Hershey
schooling system, before passing away at age 1945.?

?The history of Hershey's chocolate?

?With Milton Hershey's success came a profound sense of moral
responsibility and benevolence. His ambitions were not limited to
producing chocolate. Hershey envisioned a complete new community
around his factory. He built a model town for his employees that
included comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation
system, a quality public school system and extensive recreational and
cultural opportunities. Unlike other industrialists of his time,
Hershey avoided building a faceless company town with row houses. He
wanted a "real home town" with tree-lined streets, single- and
two-family brick houses, and manicured lawns. He was concerned about
providing adequate recreation and diversions, so he built a park that
opened on April 24, 1907, and expanded rapidly over the next several
years.?

?In 1935, Milton Hershey established The M.S. Hershey Foundation, a
small, private charitable foundation to provide educational and
cultural opportunities for local residents. The Foundation supports
three entities: Hershey Museum and Hershey Gardens, the Hershey
Theatre and the Hershey Community Archives.?

?In 1963, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of The Pennsylvania
State University was founded with a $50 million award from the Milton
Hershey School Trust Fund for construction and endowment, and $21.3
million from the U.S. Public Health Services. The College of Medicine
enrolled its first students in 1967 and has conferred 2,182 doctor of
medicine degrees.?

?The Milton S. Hershey Testamentary Trust makes an annual contribution
to the Derry Township School District, the local public school
district.?

in 1937, is now an award-winning, 23 acre botanical gem that delights
all visitors with its grace and serenity.?

?Hershey did not limit his philanthropy to central Pennsylvania, notes
Snyder, who as senior vice president is responsible for Hershey Foods'
law department, government relations and international operations.
When the company had extensive sugar plantations and refineries in
Hershey, Cuba (now known as Camilo Cienfuegos), Milton Hershey also
built a school and orphanage for that community.?

If you want to know some present time Hershey philanthropic programs,
the Hershey?s Fund Raising website has some news about them.

?HERSHEY'S has joined with the FBI-endorsed National Child
Identification Program (www.childidprogram.com) and the American
Football Coaches Association (www.afca.com) to help distribute child
identification kits nationally to organizations participating in our
fundraising programs.?

?The HERSHEY'S All-USA High School Band is the first program of its
kind to acknowledge band students for their academic and musical
achievements. Many of us know that involvement in music increases
academic achievement, builds teamwork skills, and develops a sense of
commitment. These qualities are crucial to the success of our youth in
today's society.?

the United States ? who have demonstrated a heartfelt passion, an
enthusiastic commitment and a contagious spirit to help kids succeed

There was an interesting tidbit in the 4th section of the answer:

?Hershey's philanthropy became the center of his life ... Finally, he
left his entire legacy to the Hershey schooling system, before passing
away at age 1945.?

Wow, was he old! So, eating chocolate can help you to live over 19 centuries!
