I need a list of the top 1000 American colleges based upon undergraduate
enrollment and also the total number of students who begin college
each year. If Top 1000 is not available, I'd take perhaps the top 500
although more would be better. I would also be interested in other
proportional information such as "of the approx 4000 American
colleges, 90% of students attend the largest 400 institutions".

Are you indeed seeking only U.S. colleges (without graduate programs)
or all U.S. colleges AND universities? There are about 2,000 U.S.
colleges and universities; about another 2,200 community colleges.

It would be more helpful to me to receive the information in two
buckets. One for colleges and universities and the other for community
colleges. After posting, I saw that ACT reports 1.5mm students start
college each year. I believe that number includes community colleges,
but I'm not sure.

Let me know if you need further clarification. GW

I don't think that you're going to get the information exactly the way
that you've specified, but the National Center for Education
Statistics (part of the the U.S. Department of Education) has a lot of
statistical data on enrollment.

Go to this page and choose from several dozen tables under "Enrollment":

Thanks Omnivorous. Where did you find the information about the number
of colleges/universities and the number of community colleges?

If anyone else wants to take a stab at it, I'd still like to buy an answer.

The number of higher education institutions is in the NCES "Digest of
Education Statistics," which is published annually, though data lags a
bit:
http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2002130

My old almanac indicates 2,169 4-year colleges & universities and
1,469 community colleges -- though the number of community colleges
has continued to grow.
