In the 1950s, Dr Bruno Bettelheim of the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic
Schoool in Chicago wrote a case study of 'Joey, The Mechanical Boy'
in The Scientific American. This was later followed-up in his book The
Empty Fortress. Who was Joey? What became of him? Where is he today?

There's a good chance that due to legal restrictions regarding privacy
that you won't be able to get this information. Assuming that Joey is
an alias (and that no surname is given) one would probably have to get
the "real" name. I would think that your primary options would be to
contact the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School at the University of
Chicago and inquire about access to their patient records(!).

   The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School
   http://orthogenicschool.uchicago.edu/index.html

Also, the University of Chicago's Special Collections Research Center
indicates that they have a finding aid (not available online) for a
sub-collection entitled "Bruno Bettelheim. Papers."

Since the Orthogenic School, and the U of Chicago Special Collections
appear to be the place where the information you seek would originate,
I surmise that if they don't have the information you need, or won't
part with it for privacy reasons, that you won't get an answer
anywhere.

I wish you luck nonetheless and hope one of the other Google Answers
professionals can come up with more definitive information.

No luck on answering your questio, but I did come across this
interesting tidbit:

Daily Variety
April 5, 2002

"Mare Winningham...next stars in and exec produces, with Jason Trucco,
"Joey, a Mechanical Boy" based on a Bruno Bettelheim case."

Many times, such films include an update on the character at the end
of the story...you may want to try contacting the producers.

I looked a while before giving up.
Here's a useful bibliography, though:

You may be able to find more information through this article:
Bruno Bettelheim, "Joey: A 'mechanical boy.'" Scientific American,
200, 116-127. I am not sure if the back issue of the magazine is
available, but it may hold more facts about Joey.

Also, there is much information available from Middle Tennessee State
University (scroll down the article a bit), but it may mirror what you
already know of Joey's case:

Hope this helps in your quest.

As with most case studies, the subjects' identities are fiercly
protected, so you may not be able to discover Joey's full name or what
happened to him. However, doctors specializing in autism may be able
to help.

Have you read "The Creation of Dr. B: A Biography of Bruno Bettelheim"
written by Richard Pollak? Mr. Pollak apparently had a brother who
was a patient of Bettelheim's. His book is very well researched so
perhaps you could contact him to see if he'd be willing to share info.

Hopefully, "Joey" was not irreversibly emotionally damaged by the
fraudulent work of Bettelheim, as were most of his patients and their
families.
