I often want to write about events that took place in a certain year
in recent history, e.g. 1900 to present. For example I want to know
what the hit records where in 1990 or 1952 (and artists names), hit
movies, politcal events, major books published. I would like to know
where I can find web sites that provide this kind of information
arranged by date, so I can enter and year and get back major
milestones in music, television, publishing, politics, science, etc. I
would not mind paying for this service if it was really good, but
would prefer free sites. It can be a collection of sites. I know how
to use IMBD power search to find say the best movies of a certain
year. More examples like that is what I am looking for.

Thanks for your question. There are several sources out there that
can provide what you are looking for. I have listed several of them
below:

Any Year Today in History (http://www.scopesys.com/year/)
Enter any year and month and get a list of births, deaths and world
events that occured in that month and year

20th Century Year by Year (http://www.multied.com/20th/)
A listing of mahor events listed from 1900-1999 as well user nominated
500 most important people of the 20th century and Olympic results for
Olympic Games held during the 20th century.

The Fifties Index (http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fifties.htm)
Great source for pop history of the 50's. Movies, music, television
and other pop culture information for the 50's

Historical Atlas of the Twentieth Century
(http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/20centry.htm)
Nice collection of economic and political information with a nicely
laid out timeline

Year-by-Year 1900-2003 (http://www.infoplease.com/yearbyyear.html)
Probably should be your first stop. Breakdown of US events, world
events, economics, sports, entertainment, and science for each year as
well as some very nice timelines.

Yearly History Data (http://www.millenniumweather.com/tropical/yh.html)
Want to know the tropical storm data from 1900-1995? Here is the
place. All named storms, number that made landfall in the US.

Today in History (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/archive.html):
The Library of Congress allows you to enter a date and gives you a
significant event in history for that date. Not exactly what you are
looking for, but it may provide some additional content.

Those Were the Days, Today in History (http://www.440.com/twtd/today.html)
Similar to the LOC page, but it gives a bullet list of events that
happened on a particular date.

I hope this provides enough resources for your research. If you need
more, please let me know and I will continue my research.

Thanks again for your question!

Regards,
