A couple of years ago (during the war in Afghanistan), an american
magazine (I think it was the Time magazine) published a study
comparing the knowledge in basic geography of Americans with people
from all over the world, with questions like "Where, on a world map,
are the USA / Canada / Norway / China / Afghanistan?" and Americans
performed very poorly. I know I have seen those results online at the
time, but I can't find the link anymore. What is the link (if it
still exists)?

Hello sleeping-ga,

I believe that you are referring to the ?National Geographic-Roper
2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey.? Highlights of the survey can
be found at the National Geographic website.

Survey Results: U.S. Young Adults Are Lagging
http://geosurvey.nationalgeographic.com/geosurvey/highlights.html
?Despite the daily bombardment of news from the Middle East, Central
Asia, and other world trouble spots, roughly 85 percent of young
Americans could not find Afghanistan, Iraq, or Israel on a map,
according to a new study.

Americans ages 18 to 24 came in next to last among nine countries in
the National Geographic-Roper 2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey,
which quizzed more than 3,000 young adults in Canada, France, Germany,
Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, and the United States.
Top scorers were young adults in Sweden, Germany, and Italy.?

You can find more information about the survey at the National
Geographic website and you can even take the survey yourself.

I hope you have found this information helpful. If you have any
questions, please request clarification prior to rating the answer.
