Brand & model of your new modem?

On top of modem it says SPIRIT MAGNUM 56K V90, but on the back it says
SPIRIT SDM2000 56K V90 MAGNUM MODEM. To register at SPIRIT TECH 1/6
LANE COVE NSW AUSTRALIA 2066. In the quickstart guide under win98 it
says it will come up with a message saying 'Topic 56k external data
fax voice modem'

a couple of ideas come to mind. first, don't install modem in first
pci slot right next to agp port, as this is shared. shutdown comp, and
shift into different pci slot (this might be advised regardless as
well with win 98). second is to boot into safemode by pressing f8
during initial (either repeatedly depress, or hold down), and go into
device manager by right clicking my computer-> properties-> device
manager and expand modem, right click each entry, and select remove
(for all modem entries). reboot comp, and during boot up, you'll be
prompted to install drivers. select cdrom, and other, and select
browse (w/ modem cd in cd dr), go to cd directory, and locate drivers
for win98, double click select ok, then ok again, and if done
correctly, it will load the drivers from the cd. win98 demands that
you get the drivers correct. you'll need to reboot into safemode and
reattempt. (f8-> safe mode-> device manager-> reboot routine). this is
one of the hassles associated w/ win98. get the process down, and then
things go much smoother. swapping cards around into different pci
slots (avoid the one next to agp slot if possible) is also a necessity
at times, and associated w/ win98 as well. hope this works out!

edit of above comment:
"you'll need to reboot into safemode and
reattempt."

should be: if it doesn't work out correctly, you'll need to reboot
into safemode and reattempt (device manager-> expand modem, right
click entry, select remove, and reboot).

another edit (sorry):
this:

during initial (either repeatedly depress, or hold down), and go into
device manager by right clicking my computer-> properties-> device
manager and expand modem, right click each entry, and select remove
