Hi cornell,

Good day and thanks for your question.

First things first - power everything down.

1. Connect an ethernet cable from your DSL modem to the 'WAN' port of
your router (at the extreme left).

2. Connect an ethernet cable from your desktop computer to one of the
four ports on the router (labeled 1-4).

4. Connect the Power Adapter to the Router?s Power port

? The Power LED will illuminate green as soon as the power adapter is connected.

? The Diag LED will illuminate red for a few seconds while the
Router goes through its internal diagnostic test. The LED will turn
off when the self-test

is complete.

5. Power on the cable or DSL modem. Verify that the power is on by
checking the Link LED in the WAN column on the front of the Router.
The Link LED
will be illuminated if the power is on and the modem is ready.

6. Press the Reset button on the back of the Router. Hold the button
in for three seconds, or until the Diag LED illuminates red. This
restores the Router?s
default settings.

7. Power on your PC.

Configuring your PCs - Do these steps for both computers:

1. Click the Start button, open the Control Panel. and click the
Network and Internet Connections icon.

2. Then, click the Network Connections icon to display the Network screen.

3. Select the Local Area Connection icon for the applicable Ethernet adapter

4. Right click Local Are Conection and click Properties.

5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

6. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and verify that Obtain
DNS server address automatically is selected

7. Click the OK button and click the OK button on the subsequent
screens to complete the PC?s configuration.

Now, you have to configure the router:

1. Open your web browser, and enter 192.168.1.1 into the web browser?s
Address field and press the Enter key.

2. A Connect to 192.168.1.1 window will pop up. Leave the User Name
field empty, and enter admin in lowercase letters in the Password
field. Then, click the
OK button.

3. To setup your router for wireless access, verify that the Setup
tab?s Wireless fields are completed as follows:

Enable/Disable : Selecting the Enable radio button will enable the
Router?s wireless feature. Wireless functions will not be available
unless enabled.

SSID: The SSID is a unique name for your wireless network. It is case
sensitive and must not exceed 32 characters. The default SSID is
"linksys " but
you should change this to a personal wireless network name.

Allow ?Broadcast? SSID to associate?: To increase network security,
the Router?s Utility prevents the SSID from being seen on networked
PCs. Without this

enabled, someone could easily obtain this information with site survey
software of any software and gain access to your network. To enable
this function,

click the Yes radio button beside this question. (Highly recommended
to select 'Yes')

Channel: Select the appropriate channel for your network from the
list provided. Any channel will do, but you must keep in mind, that
all wireless points

should use this channel. In your case, you are unlikely to add any
more wireless access points, so any value will do.

4. Now, to select the WAN connection type:
a.Select PPPoE as the WAN Connection Type.
 b. Enter the User Name.
 c. Enter the Password.
 d. Click the Apply button followed by the Continue button to save the settings.

5. Reset the power on your cable or DSL modem and restart your
computers. They will now obtain the Router's new settings.

Now, you have to configure your laptop.

Click on the Start button and select Control Panel. Click on Network
and Internet Connections and then on Network Connections. A icon
labeled Wireless Network Connection will appear. Right-click on this
icon and select Properties.

Click to highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component and then
click the Properties button.

From the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click on the
Advanced button.

Make sure that Register this connection's addresses in DNS and Use
this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration are both unchecked.

Under the WINS tab, verify that Enable LMHOSTS lookup is checked.

Make sure that Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected.

Click on OK and then click on the OK button again.

Click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top of the Wireless Network
Connection Properties window. Be sure the the box Use Windows to
configure my network settings is checked.

Below the section labeled Preferred Networks is an Add button. Click
on it and a new window labeled Wireless Network Properties will pop
up.

In the Network Name (SSID) field, type the name you entered in the
SSID in Step 3 of the router configuration.

Click on the Advanced button and verify that the Access Point
(infrastructure) networks only option is selected. Click OK to
continue. Click on OK again to exit the Wireless Network Connection
Properties window.

You will now be able to connect to the Internet through wireless !

When I try to configure the router the connect window won't allow me
to leave the User Name field empty: when I just enter the Passwork
"admin" and click OK nothing happens

Try username=admin and password blank.

If this doesn't work, let me know.
