I've been fascinated with the notion of traveling to Libya, even before the State Department removed the clamps on visiting that country. As an American newly free to exercise my travel choices, what options do I have for travel there? Have any travel companies set up organized tours? | |

But what is there to see there? Is the culture there so different from adjacent arab states that it is worth the trouble. What historic sites are there or visual attractions are there that make Libya particularly attractive to you. I am not questioning your views at all just curious as to what it is that I have missed when I have looked at North Africa also. I mean I looked at Morocco which seems most attractive and already tourist oriented. Then there is Algeria also plus North African cities like Tangiers, Casablanca etc. Of course there is the famous Casbah and the blue people of the desert who wear blue clothes permanently etc. Not my question or place to write back I know so forgive my impertinence for just a minute please. |

No problem - you've asked valid questions that I've asked myself. Well, if you go to lonelyplanet.com, you'll read a very favorable description of the place. Most notably, a lack of annoying vendors which are apparently more common in the places you mentioned. The best Roman ruins are in Libya, at a place called Leptis Magna. In addition, there is always the lure of the "new" and the "forbidden." While it's not exactly the latter anymore, I think in some way it's perceived that way. I really want to experience a wildly different culture in a North African desert settings. I want to see the Sahara. I know there are other countries which can fulfil these criteria, but there is something about the idea of experiencing them in Libya. I haven't made up my mind about which country in N. Africa I want to see, I'm trying to get as much input as I can. BTW, Algeria is apparently not a safe place to go. Lots of State Department warnings lately. |
