This is for a 'no name brand' modem bought circa 2000 and tech says
nearest driver is on driver.com Pacific, but unable to download
because he reckons company out of date. If I search for a suitable
driver in win98 it says found but 'this driver not specially for this
modem - not recommend install' If I do use it, it dials up and
connects, but straight away disconnects and says in error message
'driver incorrect' or words to that effect. On top of modem says 56000
bps data/fax/voice/modem. On back it says FCC no H52PT-3020 and DATA
is K56 Flex/ITU-T V.90 & ITU-T V.34 MNP 4/5 & V.42/V/42bis

Is this the Spirit Magnum 56K V90 modem that you mentioned in your
question "windows 98se"

Is this an internal or external modem?

Could you give more info about the modem?

No this is not the spirit magnum referred to in win09se problem. It is
the modem that would not work becuase it bombed out, so I thought, go
and buy a brand new one (spirit magnum) with a driver disk and be
done. But the win98se problem for that, means that the new modem cant
be used, never mind the driver IT CANT FIND THE MODEM! It is an
external modem, but that is all the info I have on it. It never came
in a box, it never had a disk, but it HAS been working. Unfortunately
last weekend I tried to practice on my 3 network computers at home
with netboy and unfortunately uninstalled all drivers (modem as well
by mistake) and now I have stuffed up my modem connection. See I am on
adsl and have dsl 704 router, but I need that other tel modem to dial
up Aust Tax Office because they do not have ip yet. I cant give any
more info than what was on the modem, but the tech seems to think he
found the driver at pacific, but it wont download. He thinks pacific
are out of business. But what I cant understand is how I had it
working all these years and its only now that I am having trouble. I
suspect that the driver is not the problem at all, but that this
computer or win98se needs to be upgraded, but I have to reconnect to
the lan and all that and was hoping to take the easy way out by just
getting a driver. But i dont think that even if I put the old modem
back the set will see it. I reckon its the computer, but it would be
worth $10 to have the driver on a disk just for future ref. Otherwise
I will be inclined to bin the modem.

"...IT CANT FIND THE MODEM!"

Did you check the connections for this modem? Are you sure that all
the connections are properly attached and securely in place? Is the
modem turned on when you tried to detect it?

no I did not, and I reckon when I do, I will be surprised to find that
I did not check properly at the outset. Just assumed replaced one
modem with other that everything was right. However I am going out to
TRY to network my two grandons computers for about an hour and will do
what you say when I get back. Thanks a lot so far anyway

Yes indeed, I did find the modem. It was indolence on my part because
I had so much spaghetti wiring down here that I did not want to put
two synaptic cables together so use a 9 pin - 9pin serial cable, but
it must be a crossover or other because it was the trouble, and thanks
for that. But unfortunately even though installed, and I can see it in
devices, the driver is NOT there. I put in the disk they gave me when
it asked for it and it said installed, and then tried again to
reinstall because there is not dial tone coming out when dial up (no
noise no connect)But tested the line with phone and its got dialtone.
Now, not one, but two modems giving me driver trouble, Should I see
the dialup modem under tc/ip on net neihg props? When I go to modem
and check drivers it sayst installed, but I cannot see it installed
anywhere and I think it is not installed.

I tried reinstalling modem again by going to add hardware. Said it
found standard modem so went for it. This time, got dialtone and
everything but cut off. Says wrong driver (that must be the standard
driver). But if I remove I dont get dialtone. Whats the matter with
this computer that it cannot seem to find modem drivers, Do you think
because it was on the network and i just took out the network cable,
that this is what is causing the trouble. There is only one driver
there and its tcip for the network card. If I take it out I may have
trouble getting it back in, and in any case the moded used to work
WHILE CONNECTED TO LAN ADSL, because I used to dial up to get ASIC
while on net!!!
Do you reckon its got something to do with cisco dial up which they
gave us as a vpn. Maybe I ought to go and get my microtax disks and
reinstall cisco????

This may or not be worthless to you, but whenever I am having tech.
problems, I post a question on http://www.anandtech.com forums. They
are the smartest bunch o' people I've ever met - and the nerdiest. If
there is an answer to be knowen, they'll help you find it.
