I've got the book 'The Nokia Revolution' by Dan Steinbock and I am
amazed that a relatively small Finnish company could take on the
Japanese, German, French & US giants, and win.

I can't see how the environment contributed in any way.

Maybe they recognised that they would just have to try harder?
