3/1/04 Can anyone tell me what songwriter and/or performer
popularized the Tchaikovsky theme from "Souvenir d,un Leiu Cher" as
"Deep Purple" This would have been in the 1930,s or 40's. The line I
remember is "When the Deep Purple Falls over sleepy garden walls"
Thanks, Bobby

Deep Purple was originally written in 1934 and the lyrics were added in 1939.
Music composed by Peter De Rose
Words by Mitchell Parish

- ?Written in 1934 as a piano composition - lyrics added in 1939

- #1 hit for Larry Clinton & His Orchestra in 1939

- #20 for Billy Ward And His Dominoes in 1957

- #1 for Nino Tempo & April Stevens in 1963

- #14 for Donny and Marie Osmond in 1976?

Here are the lyrics to Deep Purple

"When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to flicker in the sky
Through the mist of a memory you wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh
In the still of the night once again I hold you tight
Though you're gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat, lover we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
Here in my deep purple dreams"

About Peter Rose:

?Deep Purple? was his biggest hit, and it appeared originally as a
piano solo in 1933. A year later, Paul Whiteman had it orchestrated
for his band and performed it widely, still as an instrumental. But
the popularity of the piece really began when lyrics were added in
1939 by Mitchell Parish.?
