Love to cook my own bread in one of those little machines, but is
there not a similarly small sized slicing machine that acts out the
same function as in the bigger bakery shop,i.e place the bread on
angled tray and multi-suite of blades cuts up loaf in one fell swoop.
I mean one that could fit on the kitchen ledge just like the bread
baking machine. Yes I can slice bread or buy a electric knife but I
see how quick and efficient they do it in bakery shops on the big
electric slicers and I just thought if a much smaller version of that
exists that can do one loaf then I would very much like one.

Hi john,

Well, I have good news and bad news. Bad news first - unless you feed
bread to the neighborhood, buying an electric bakery-style slicer will
make your daily bread an expensive affair. For example, here are some
middle-of-the-road counter-top models:

Thunderbird commercial Bread Slicers: $1998.00 - $3680.00:
http://www.yourdelight.com/thunderbird_bread_slicer.htm

Oliver 709 Mini Supreme Bread Slicer: $3,175:

Oliver 709 on eBay: $850:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2595082042&category=25361

Counter Top Bread Slicer: $4,660:
http://www.oliverproducts.com/bakery_equipment/slicers_accessories/bread_slicer_711.htm

Which leads me to wonder about why you would want to slice your
wonderful loaf of bread in one fell swoop. One of the advantages of
making your own bread is that it stays fresh longer because it is
uncut - you cut off a slice as needed. With sliced bread, all of those
cut edges are exposed to the air and become stale sooner. Therefore,
here is my pick for you. It's stylish and will look nice on your
countertop, you will be able to cut uniform slices as need, and the
price is right.

1) Bread Slicer: $10.99:
"Bread machines have shown a whole new generation the joys of
home-baked bread - and the frustrations of slicing. Use this slicer
instead, for carving a whole loaf into uniform 1/2" slices. 6"H x 9
1/2"L x 6 1/2"W. Made of rubberwood. Assembly required."

Consider buying a bread knife to go with your slicer:

SKÄRPT bread knife: $39:

Facts & Trivia: Bread:
http://www.foodreference.com/html/fbread.html

"Most Germans have a bread slicer, which is a hand-cranked or electric
apparatus something like our meat slicers except with larger "teeth".
This makes it very easy to cut nice, even, slim slices perfectly.
American bread, even homemade, doesn't slice that well in a bread
slicer so most Americans probably don't have a bread slicer on hand.
We got two our last tour in Germany one year during "junking", which
is another great German tradition."

I hope you'll find at least one of these slicers appropriate for your
needs but if not, or if you have any questions, or if you need to find
one with instructions in Mandarin 8-), please post a clarification
request before closing/rating my answer.

Thank you,

Gee I'm sorry Hummer; I dont usually leave the rating for so long at
all. My apologies. Of course your answer was first rate and gave me
what I needed to know and more! I just thought there may be something
out there for my dear old Mum thats all. yes of course it is part of
the fun cutting up new fresh hot bread but my Mum uses the electric
baker all the time regularly hosting a craft group of older ladies who
she makes big batches of sandwiches for. With her age and arthrytis I
figured there may be something to make it easier on her.

Thanks again Hummer and good researching,

   JOHN
