I have on occasion downloaded up to five files at the same time,
saving one to disk, then moving on to the others in sequence until all
five are coming in simultaneously. Is there any limit to the number of
files that can be downloaded in this manner and, if so, what factors
result in such a limit?

The answer to your question is not a definite number, but simply
another question: How many downloads can your computer handle? Using
DSL, I have personally downloaded as many as 15 files at a time--on a
good day. So, certainly, how you connect to the Internet (if you?re
downloading off the Internet) plays a large factor, faster connections
enabling you to download more.

What else you have running on your computer may also be a factor. Your
CPU Usage window (found in Windows Task Manager) can indicate just how
"busy" your computer already is, so that you can shut down functions
or programs that might slow down downloads.

Internet Explorer can also limit the number of downloads you?re able
to establish. If you want to change the settings, to enable more
downloads, follow these steps:

1. Click Start>Run.
2. Type ? regedit ? (without the quotation marks) and click OK to
start the Registry Editor.
3. Navigate to HKEY CURRENT
USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
4. In the right pane, click an empty space. Select New and then DWORD value.
5. Name the new value MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
6. Right click the new value and select Modify.
7. Under Base, select Decimal.
8. In the Value data field, type the number of simultaneous
connections you want to allow. Click OK.
9. Repeat steps 4 through 8, this time creating a value called
MaxConnectionsPerServer.
10. Close the Registry Editor.
