Question ID: 312784
I have information about a small publicly listed medical technolgy
firm that deals in oncolgy products and would like to know the name of
it and its ticker code. It has revenues in excess of $1billion and net
profit over $130 million. It uses cutting edge technology to kill
cancer tumors with a success rate of 96%. The product that does this
costs $1.7mill each. Its cancer treatments have just become eligible
for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.

Their patented system uses digital technology and computer-generated
images to aim powerful radiation beams at cancerous tumors. Unlike
traditional radiation therapy, however, this company's system avoids
damaging healthy organs and tissue near the tumor. And the company's
products are so precisely engineered that they can sculpt beams to fit
specific areas, as well as modulate the intensity of the beams for
different types of tumors.

Very soon the company will unveil an upgrade to existing technology
that will even let radioactive beams adjust to body movements as a
patient breathes. It's that precise.

In addition to that this same medical technology company has developed
a product that works like a giant airport baggage screening system.
And can generate steel-piercing X-rays that see through container
walls and allows contraband nowhere to hide. Electronic images are
captured and transmitted to a computer monitor at an operator's
station. The machine can scan a full container the size of a tractor
trailer in less than three minutes. In short, it's practical,
efficient and cost-effective.

I am sure there is only one company that fits all the above. Who can help?

I am confident that the company you are describing is Varian Medical
Systems, Inc. The company's NYSE ticker code is VAR.

"Varian Medical Systems, Inc., (NYSE:VAR) of Palo Alto, California is
the world's leading manufacturer of integrated cancer therapy systems,
which are used to treat thousands of patients per day. The company is
also a premier supplier of X-ray tubes and flat-panel digital
subsystems for imaging in medical, scientific, and industrial
applications. Varian Medical Systems employs approximately 2,900
people who are located at manufacturing sites in North America and
Europe and in its 50 sales and support offices around the world. In
its most recent fiscal year ended September, 26, 2003, Varian Medical
Systems reported sales of $1 billion.

Varian Medical Systems is today organized around three operations.
Oncology Systems is the world's largest supplier of integrated cancer
equipment and systems, including the market-leading Clinac medical
linear accelerator. The company's X-ray Tube Products operation is the
leading independent supplier of X-ray tubes for the worldwide
diagnostic imaging industry, including tubes expressly designed for
the most advanced mammography and computed tomography (CT) scanning
applications. Varian Medical Systems' Ginzton Technology Center has a
mission to create, acquire, and manage bold new breakthrough
technologies that will further advance medical diagnosis and
treatment, while creating potentially high-growth opportunities. The
center's current focus is on brachytherapy, digital X-ray imaging, and
emerging biotechnologies."

The precisely-targeted cancer treatment is Intensity Modulated
Radiation Therapy (IMRT):

"Fortunately, Sarah has a new treatment option that has only recently
become available. She can be treated at about 200 radiation oncology
clinics around the world now using new SmartBeam? IMRT technology
developed by Varian Medical Systems. SmartBeam IMRT has been compared
to shooting at a target with the precision of a high-powered laser.
With IMRT, the target area covered by the X-ray beam is narrowed and
matched to the shape of the tumor. This enables the oncology team to
direct and narrowly concentrate potent doses of high-energy X rays at
Sarah?s tumor while minimizing complications from hitting surrounding
healthy tissue.

With SmartBeam IMRT, Sarah?s oncology team will put her tumor in a
crossfire, targeting it with precisely shaped beams delivered from
several directions or angles. This will envelop the tumor in a finely
sculpted radiation cloud within the area where the beams intersect."

Regarding the steel-piercing X-ray machine that is used for screening
large cargo containers, Varian's Linatron linear accelerator fits the
bill:

"These trailer-sized, steel-walled cargo containers are typically
sealed in foreign ports and not opened again until delivered by trucks
to points all across the United States. It?s not hard to imagine these
containers being used for smuggling contraband ? even a weapon of mass
destruction. To physically open each container and extract and inspect
the contents by hand would be too time-consuming and unrealistic.
Clearly, what?s needed is some means of searching the containers
quickly and thoroughly without disrupting the flow of goods. An X-ray
imaging system like Varian Medical Systems? Linatron® linear
accelerator is an excellent candidate for the job. It can generate
steel-piercing X rays that 'see' through container walls and allow
contraband nowhere to hide."
