Here we go pagej, hope you find this useful.
(1) Never fish where or how someone tells you, "I caught them there
yesterday". They are probably somewhere else today and you will get
frustrated because you can't catch them like the other guy did. Also,
he is probably a liar anyway.
(2) What you see on the bank is what is beneath you in the water. This
is very true most of the time and structure always holds bass.
(3) You don't have to use big lures to catch big fish. I first
discovered this when I kept catching big bass while crappie fishing.
Plastic "fliptail" jigs in 1/8 and 1/4 oz. are deadly on bass.
(4) Never take a woman fishing with you. They will catch more fish
than you and make sure that you notice. If you have to take one, watch
what they do very closely. However, never admit that their techniques
work.
(5) Be ready for a strike when you feel your bait hang on something
under water. There is very likely a fish lurking nearby and when the
bait suddenly comes free they strike hard and quick.
(6) Many people say that bass bite best early and late in the day.
This is absolutely not true. I catch bass early or late, but my
favorite and most productive time is midday.
(7) I have never relied on solunar tables for fishing. I don't doubt
that they work, but just fish whenever you get the chance. I have
definately had great days on poorly rated table periods.
(8) I am sure that high tech fish fish finders are helpful and provide
an advantage when used properly. However, bait fish and bird activity
are surefire fish finders.
(9) Never miss the spawning season. Spawning, prespawn, and postspawn
bass are very agressive and can make a average fisherman look like a
TV star.
(10) Try places where no one else fishes. Boat houses up in coves,
shallow water, trees that are difficult to cast under. On Lake Texoma
there was a club at a marina that hung out over the water with many
support pilings. No one fished it but me and we caught huge bass there
year after year.
(11) Launching ramps are always good. Try each side and right down the
middle. Small bait fish hang around and so do bass.
(12) Don't use any heavier line than you have to. I never use heavier
that 6# and don't lose many fish. If you fight the fish properly, you
can catch a 10# fish on 6# line. Also, buy cheap line and change it
often. That expensive line isn't worth the money>
(13) Learn how to tie the Polamar knot and use it.
(14) It doesn't hurt to learn how to drink. If the fish aren't biting,
you can still have fun. Also, take your dog. Dogs love to fish and
never complain.
(15) The same guy (a pro fisherman) that told me about catching lots
of small bass also said, "Redhoss, you will never catch a fish sitting
at home in your easy chair". He is a very wise man and great
fisherman.
Hope you enjoy these pearls of wisdom as much as I have enjoyed
passing them along to you.
Fish on, fish on
