Brilliant question onyesaw, and simply answered: The First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, commencing June 19 of the year 325 CE, commonly known as the Council of Nicaea. It is not the whole answer, since there had been many attempts at dealing with emerging diversity within the early Christian church prior to the council, and one could spend a great deal of time (a career, in fact!) discussing them, but the biggest questions that had arisen during the first three hundred or so years of Christianity were resolved definitively at the council.
