Does a satisfactory answer have to be an online source, or would it
suffice to tell you where you could find the information by visiting a
particular location in Chicago?

Thanks for your helpful clarification.

Chicago telephone directories for 1878-1971 are available to the
public on microfilm at the Chicago Public Library.

They are located at the Social Sciences Division of the Library on the
fifth floor of the Harold Washington Library Center at 400 South State
Street, Chicago, IL 60605. The telephone number of the Social
Sciences Division is 312-747-4600. The hours of the Center are:

Monday - Thursday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Friday and Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Sunday: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Here is a link to the home page of the Harold Washington Library
Center that will link you to more information about the Center and its
collections:

And here is a link to the page devoted to the Library's genealogical
resources. This page include the information posted above about the
availability of telephone directories, along with much more that may

Search strategy:

I am familiar with the Chicago Public Library's Web site, so I went
there and used the search feature on its home page to find "telephone
directories."

Based on your clarification, I am confident that this is the
information you are seeking, and good luck in finding the telephone
numbers you are looking for.
