I need a hand-held stopwatch/timer that doesn't make any sound. No
beeps on timeout, no ticks as time passes.

Where can I get a stopwatch that vibrates on a time-out? Where can I
get a stopwatch that changes color on a time-out?

Hi Suleimaan,

I've found several items that should help you out. These tools are
used by airplane pilots, test-takers, and the deaf, to name a few!

Vibrating stopwatches (often part of a wristwatch) are more common
than flashing stopwatches, however, one company seems to make one that
does both. I've also included other options of varying prices.

Hi librarygopher, thanks for your research. The "Invisible Clock"
seems to perfectly fit my requirements for a vibrating hand-held
stopwatch. However, I am still interested in a stopwatch that changes
color on timeout. The one visual-timeout stopwatch you pointed out
does have "flashing" in it's title, but it's not even listed in the
description. Are there any stopwatches that actually change color
when there is a timeout?

Hello again Suleimann!

I'm happy to give you more information. I want to make sure you're
able to find the perfect product to suit your needs.

I found one stopwatch that flashes on timeout. Nothing came up in my
search for one that changes colors, however, hopefully a flash will
work for you.

"This customized West Bend Model 40031XTimer dual timers (count up /

when the down timer reaches zero."
$37.50

I also am including some other stopwatches that I found to supplement
the list in the initial answer:

Bodytronics -- Sportline Stopwatches
http://www.bodytronics.com/mcart/index.cgi?&task=show&cat=Sportline+Stopwatches
"Part Sportline 250 - Sportline 250 Basic SILENT stopwatch
Standard start-stop timer. Ideal for simple timing functions. Easy to
use. An excellent '"volunteers" stopwatch. Two outer buttons start or
stop the timer. Middle button resets to zero."
$19.95 (Sale Price: $17.95)
** This one doesn't flash, however it IS silent. It appears that this
stopwatch simply counts down so you'd have to keep an eye on it in
order to know when time's up!

Sportline Products -- Sport Flash Stopwatch 245
http://www.sportline.com/product%20template.asp?model=245
"Formfitting timer that "flashes" when you press the start button.
Sharp teardrop design, combined with low cost, it answers the need for
cost-performance timing. Lanyard slide doubles as a loud whistle."
$15.99
** Appears to flash only manually, when you press the start/stop
button.

Bodytronics -- Timers
http://www.bodytronics.com/mcart/index.cgi?&task=show&cat=Timers
"Part CC5033 - Vibrating count down/count up timer
Innovative countdown timer vibrates when time is up. Quietly signals
you by a vibration of the entire timer. Ideal for noisy areas where
hearing a buzzer is impossible. Perfect for alerting you during
meetings when an audible alarm is disturbing."
$34.95 (Sale Price: $29.95)

I sent an e-mail to Global Assistive Devices, the manufacturer of the
VibraLITE watches, to request further information as to the flashing
feature on their watches. I'll post any details they give me here.
If you would also like to touch base with the company, below is their

In my searching, I did find alarm clocks that flash or cause the
lights to flash, but they all require an electrical outlet, which
doesn't meet your "handheld" requirement. I also found stopwatch
programs that you can download onto a computer that flash on timeout,
but again, they're actually computer programs versus handheld
stopwatches. However, I am happy to provide further information
regarding any these products if you're interested.

Additional Search strategy (along with variations on the searches in
initial answer):

Again, please clarify if you require more details. I'll post any
response I get from Global Assistive Devices here when I receive one.

I ordered one of the vibrating stopwatches you found, but
unfortunately it isnt actually silent (the vibrations are so loud and
rattling!). I guess that rules out vibrating stopwatches as a
solution, because I am assuming they all have noise when they vibrate.
 It is unfortunate.

On the other hand I am still going to consider the visual timeout
stopwatches. I am willing to consider ones that require electrical
outlets, as long as they aren't humongous (ie small enough to hold
with one hand.

The problem with the software programs I've seen is that they are full
of useless features but dont have the feature I want (recurring
timeout on a regular basis). Also, the ones i've seen arent discrete
(I want something that can sit small in the corner of my screen, and
then just flash when time is up.

Sigh, this is hard to research. Please continue to give me hints,
they are appreciated!!

I'm so sorry that the vibrating watch is too noisy. Can you contact
the company regarding vibration volume? I believe that the battery is
what makes watches (and cell phones and pagers, etc.) vibrate so
perhaps you can get a quieter battery? One with less power?

PALM SOFTWARE

Do you have a palm device? You can download software to your palm
that has a silent option. Here are a couple of choices -- there are
many others out there you can easily find by doing a search for "alarm
clock:

To find other clock software for palm devices, go to the following
Google search results:

I wish I could find the perfect product! I hope, at least, that
you're able to find something that works for you, even though it may
have some extra features you don't need.

Another suggestion is that if you have any friends who know a lot
about computers and software, they may be able to design a simple
program for you.

Best of luck in your searching! Let me know if you have any
questions.
