How does one pronounce "Gradiva," the character discussed by Jensen and subsequently Freud? Is it a long i, or a long e? |

As the comment below indicates, Gradiva is an Italian name, so the pronunciation should be something like "grah-DEE-vah." (More to the point, that would be a long E sound.) The G is pronounced more or less as in English. The R is pronounced kind of like in Spanish, with a flip of the tongue against the gums of the upper teeth. The D is a bit softer (less explosive) than in English. And as in most Italian words, the stress is on the penultimate syllable. Long e. Grah-dee-vah. It's an Italian name/word and the "diva" part is always pronounced that way to my knowledge. My Italian grandmother backs me up on this one. |
