Hello akshayshah,

I wanted to let you know I am working on your question! I'm having
difficulty locating much in South Africa and India. I'm still working,
and will post as soon as I am finished!

Thank you,

Hi akshayshah,

I?m sorry to hear about your son?s diagnosis. The good news is that
this is almost always a treatable disease, with a lot of excellent
research being carried out. Most folks diagnosed with this condition
live out a normal lifespan, with proper treatment.

According to the Fox Chase Cancer Center, about 16,000 people in the
United States are diagnosed each year with mycosis fungoides, also
known as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, or CTCL, and sometimes called MF.

Something to consider when going through this list of hospitals, is
that some hospitals categorize CTCL under the Department of
Dermatology, while others place it under the heading of Cancer,
Lymphomas, or Hematology/Oncology (Heme/Onc)

While researching your question, I found very little information about
hospitals/doctors in South Africa, Dubai and India. While I?m sure one
can find CTCL treatment in these countries, they seem to keep this
information private. I have sent off e-mails to many hospitals, and
several have been returned already as invalid e-mail addresses.

I believe you may find a level of care more to your liking in Canada,
the UK, or the US. I am not saying care, good care, cannot be found in
the other countries, but information and arrangements are easier to
come by on UK, US, and Canadian sites. If English is not your native
language, many of the larger hospitals I?ve listed have interpreters,
or access to interpreters by phone. This may not be available in
India, Dubai, or South Africa.

Dr. Madeline Duvic, a Duke University Graduate, is a specialist in
CTCL at MA Anderson.

http://www.mdanderson.org/contact_us/

To start a New Patient Self Referral form, click this link:
https://www2.mdanderson.org/sapp/contact/sreferral.cfm
After MD Anderson receives and processes your form, they will contact
you, and ask that you have this information ready:
·	Patient name, telephone number and insurance information
·	Referring physician's name, office address, telephone and fax numbers
·	Diagnosis
·	Date of diagnosis
·	How the diagnosis was made (physical exam, biopsy, other)
·	What treatment, if any, has taken place
·	Over what time period the treatment has occurred

Please be aware that while Dr. Duvic is in charge of CTCL research,
you may not get an appointment with her. There are other specialists
under her who may treat your child. I would feel confident with anyone
being overseen by her. Some of the other specialists and fellows at
MD Anderson are
Seth J. Corey, M.D., M.P.H.
Steven Culbert, M.D.
Renée M. Madden, M.D.
Irma Ramirez, M.D.
Michael E. Rytting, M.D.
If you prefer, you can have your doctor fill out the physician?s
referral form here:
https://www2.mdanderson.org/sapp/contact/preferral.cfm
It would probably increase your chances of getting an appointment
here, if your doctor fills out the form.

South Africa
--------------------------
I had very poor luck searching for treatment in South Africa. Most
sites did not indicate what their specialties were. Of the sites that
did list specialties, only the sites I have included even had
dermatology and/or oncology departments. Many sites had broken links
and invalid e-mail addresses. Of the 15 hospitals I researched, these
were the only ones that may have potential. While I?m certain
treatment for CTCL must exist in South Africa, it is not readily
available. I have sent off numerous e-mails, and will post the results
should I get a reply. While composing this answer, I have already
gotten back two invalid e-mail address errors.

akshayshah, I realize this list does not include EVERY hospital in
the specified countries. I chose the medical centers I did from having
heard of their reputation, having worked at one of the centers, and
from what their web sites had to offer. Please realize that many
hospital sites do not advertise every condition they treat, as their
patients are referred by their primary care physicians. I do hope this
helps you locate a treatment facility for your son! I will post any
information I receive via my numerous e-mail requests for information.

If any part of my answer is unclear, or if any of the links do not
work, please request an Answer Clarification, before rating. This will
allow me to assist you further.

Wishing you and your son all the best,
crabcakes

Hello akshayshah, I just was notified by the Mayo Clinic in South
Africa. Sadly, they do not treat mycosis fungoides.

I'll let you know as I get any other responses.

Hello again!

I have just received an e-mail from a hospital in South Africa that
does not treat CTCL, but says:

"You can contact Dr Gulzar Malik, Radiation Oncologist, on +27 11 484
5260 for an appointment. He has rooms at Brenthurst Clinic in
Parktown, Johannesburg"

I can't seem to find a website for this clinic, but I found some
lodging nearby the area.

I'll keep you informed!

the names of two more hospitals in South Africa that treats mycosis
fungoides:

It still was difficult to locate a good source of information on

Hello Crabcakes

Thanks for the search results so far. I hope you can find suitable
locations in India & Dubai. There is no language problem - me & my
family all speak fluent english.

Something that might help in the search is that my son has
hypopigmented version of mycosis fungoides.

I have found the results so far quite helpful.

Once you complete the search let me know so I can rate it.

Thank you

Akshay

Hi akshayshah,

I'm glad you are pleased with the results so far. I really am at a
brick wall when it comes to Dubai and India. I'll keep trying, but
NONE of the people I have e-mailed have answered. That is, those with
valid e-mails.

I have written one other contact, recommended by the woman who
recommended, as a CTCL patient herself, who recommended two hospitals
in South Africa. I wrote to her two days ago, but have not heard back.

Could you let me know your native language?

I plan to continue my search, but I really don't have great
expectaions in regards to finding more sources from India and Dubai.

Regards, crabcakes

Hi again akshayshah,

Your son has a very rare form of mycosis fungoides. According to the
following abstract, only 5 cases have been documented. Pathologically,
the disease is the same, but seen in patients under 20, and most often
people of African descent. One theory is that the malignant cells that
cause CTCL in the first place, causes a decrease in numbers, and
abnormal formation of menalocytes (the cells that produce skin
pigment), causing flaking, itching and areas of hypopigmentation.

Hello akshayshah,

I have recieved an e-mail from a woman who works with CTCL on a
worldwide basis, sort of an information clearinghouse. She told me
that there are no actual mycosis fungoides specialists, per se, but
groups of doctors who rely on help and support from other specialists,
and who may stay in contact with the scientists who research this
disorder.

She sugests you come to the US, to one of the several centers I have
listed already, as these centers have multi-disciplinary groups of
physicians such as hematology/oncology specialists and dermatologists.
These different specialists work together, combining their own areas
of expertise to arrive at the best treatment for a patient.

I hope this helps you out a bit more. Unless you have any other
questions regarding this question, I shall consider this question
closed, as I have no additional information to add.

Again, I wish you and your son all the best!

crabcakes

Hello Crabcakes

Thanks for all the help so far. I have been trying to contact all the
institutions based in UK & USA to find out how many cases each
institution has treated of juvenile mycosis fungoides. I plan to visit
USA second week of June with my son and the idea is to visit the
institute which has treated the maximum number of cases of juvenile
mycosis fungoides - hence indicating maximum experience in the
treatment. Based on what you have provided I have decided not to
pursue treatment in India, Dubai & South Africa.

I am not getting prompt replies from the USA & UK institutions
however. Would it be possible for you to get this info ? I am willing
to pay another $200 foir the service.

Thanks

Akshay

Hi akshayshah,

It is good to hear from you again. I had come to the same conclusion
as you have about what countries seemed the best for your son's
treatment-at least based on the available information.

You would like to have information on the number of patients treated
at each hospital in the US and the UK.(That's good information to
know!) I would be glad to try and get the answers for you. The best
way to do this is to post a new question, adding "For crabcakes" in
the subject line. If I am unable to find the information, another
researcher can work on it. If no one can get the information, you will
be charged nothing, other than the $0.50 posting charge.

Regards,
crabcakes
