Question ID: 314627
I did have rh9 on a 486 machine with a 3gig disk. I used fdisk to
create logical fat32 primary partition and formatted it c:\s. I then
set my bios to boot from cdrom and when started asked to install win98
setup from cdrom. But it says error in config.sys line 16 or words to
that effect.Where is it getting the config.sys from - nothing on c:.
Therefor it must be coming from cdrom, but how can that config.sys be
wrong when it is my win98se disk bought for $168 and used many times
to install win98se? Maybe my hd is defective, but is still does not
answer my question. Where is it reading the config.sys file from
please?

Hi,

Perhaps a floppy disk left in the drive? If the cd isn't bootable on
that particular computer, it will most likely look at the floppy
drive.

Regards,
mrbuzz

Try using a (floopy) bootdisk with CDROM support and change the BIOS
to boot from A:.You can get one from www.bootdisk.com.You also don't
need the /s parameter try a simple format c: and see if that helps.

Thanks for that. I did download and is on floppy now. Unfortunately
computer is at home and I will only get back to it at 6pm this
evening. But looking forward to seeing if it works. Will get back to
you. Thanks a lot, TIM

You will need a working computer to extract the image from the
bootdisk file just click on it and it will ask you to put in a
formatted disk and then it will copy the files.

Windows 98 on a 486 is a very unlikely mix, you'd be lucky if you can
get Windows 95 on it.

Thanks for that, and I reckon you are spot on, because I did about 5
pentiums like this and had no trouble. I reckon I will take out the
network cards and bin the rest

Have you ever used this Win98 bootable cd on this computer before? I
had an old 486 that only worked with certain bootable cds. That's my
main concern, whether this computer will actually accept the bootable
cd.

Mr Buzz, No I have not used that particular computer to install win98.
I had 5 pentiums which I used the cdrom to install win98 and never had
any trouble. Hence my worry that somehow I had stuffed up my win98se
disk. But from what you say, not so. It seems that I am pushing
molasses uphill with this. Only wanted to get it going so I could
network my grandsons 2 computers with a crossover cable using netbuie.
Will go and get my grand daughters pentium tonight and ask her if I
may use hers as a test machine. Thanks very much, although I will try
with that startup disk I downloaded. But I agree with you, even if I
do get it going it is going to be near useless with win98 on it.
Thanks for your help
