How can you tell the definitive physcial differences between a bichon
frise and a coton du tulears? (I am trying to identify my dog--I
don't know her origins. What I need are differences in weight range,
body confirmation, coloring, etc. Distinguishing marks, etc. )

Dear nancyk-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.

You will have better luck if you search for the name COTON DE TULEAR
(note ?de? rather than ?du?).

You may have a difficult time discerning between the two breeds. You
see, the Coton de Tulear is actually a ?type? of Bichon dog. Some time
shortly before the 17th Century Bichons from Tenerife were brought to
Madagascar and nearby islands on trade ships. From these original dogs
came the breed that became known as ?Colon de Reunion?, now extinct.
The descendants of these dogs flourished near the city of Tulear,
Madagascar, and eventually developed into the breed that is known
today as the ?Coton de Tulear?.

?The Coton is a toy breed of dog that weighs 5-7kgs and is 10-12 inches tall.?

?The Coton de Tulear is a fluffy little, white ball, sometimes with
patches of color. They usually stand from around 10 to 12 inches and
weight from 10 to 13 lbs. The body is rectangular and the backline
should be slightly convex. The head is triangular and rather small.
The coat is long, dry, oil and dander free and has no doggy odor, so
it is a good choice for allergy sufferers. It is kept tangle free by
bushing and/or combing several times a week. Shedding is minimal.

Coton puppies are often born with color that fades as the puppy
reaches adulthood. Patches of yellow and black, notably on the ears
and allowed usually on no more than 1/3 of the body hair, are often
seen and are permissible. However, the Coton should be predominantly
white by the time it reaches adulthood. Black spots that do not fade
are not permitted in the adult dog in the show ring.?
