Question ID: 315009
I'm trying to get a green/sage satin flight/bomber jacket like what
skinheads wore in the 80's. the jacket must be shiney and soft and the
material ripple when worn.

Request for Question Clarification by umiat-ga on 09 Mar 2004 14:02 PST
Do you have any links to pictures of the jacket you are thinkin of?
Secondly, if an exact match cannot be found, would you be open to some
sore of variation? If so, what?

These jackets where very popular in the 80s and 90s they are similar
to the MA1 flight jacket except the material was shiney and silky soft
satin and light weight. They may be coppies of the origional MA1
jackets, but not sure.
Some gay guys wear these jackets but like skinheads it was an 80s/90s fashion item.

Hello, satinsmooth-ga!

The Bomber/flight jackets were definitely an earmark of early
skinhead clothing. To be sure that the skinheads did not wear some
special type of flight jacket that was of an unusual design, I checked
out a few sights devoted to skinhead attire. The jackets are, indeed,
traditional military flight jackets. Traditional bomber/flight
jackets, if not made of leather or coarse material, are actually made
of "satin nylon".

Overview of Skinheads flight jackets
=====================================

"Jackets were usually black, navy blue or olive drab American flight
jackets (also called bomber jackets), though occasionally one would
see a skinhead with a maroon flight jacket, this appeared to be the
acceptable colour deviation. The flight jackets would be adorned with
1" pins decorated with band logos or political slogans."

And Maintenance Practices Of A Montréal Anti-Racist Skinhead Gang," by

Can you tell me a little bit more about the flight jackets and patches
etc.. that skinheads wear?

A. The Alpha MA-1 Flight Jackets are the easiest to find, since they
can be bought relatively at any military surplus store

And the different colored flight jackets?

A. Oh yeah, this isn't a rule of thumb, but usually happens this way.
Black flight jackets for the male skinhead, red/burgundy flight
jackets for the female skinhead, green/camo flight jackets for the
survivalist/skinheads and the blue flight jackets are usually
associated with straight-edge skinheads. sXe for short. I personally
recommend two flight jackets, one with patches, one without any.
Preferably a simple green one without patches for obvious reasons.

The bomber/flight jackets can be found on auction sites like eBay or
in Vintage clothing stores. You can also buy new jackets of similar
design and fabric. The following flight jackets all have a "satin
outer shell", though the fabric is actually made of nylon.

* As you look through the list, you will notice that some look silkier
than others. I have included new jackets as well as used jackets from
Vintage clothing stores.

* Take a look at what I have found. Then, if all else fails, you can
have a custom flight jacket made for you by FlightJacket.com

often sold with corportate or sports team logos. You may order a kelly
green jacket, free of any design, from Macoy.com. While billed as a
"Satin Jacket", please also be aware that it is made of 100% nylon.
(The only problem is, there is no picture of the green, and I have a
feeling it might be too bright)

The jackets i'm after are those MA1 Flight jackets.
The material must be silky satin and most of those MA1 flight jackets
are made of heavy duty material.
When i saw a jacket worn in the 90s it looked like leather from a
distance but was very shiney green satin. which rippled alot when
worn, and was very smooth to the touch.
maybe some links to satin jackets might throw up ideas.

Hello, satinsmooth!

If the MA1 jacket you saw is very different from the jackets profiled
in my answer, I cannot help but think that you saw a custom-made
jacket or one from a very small clothing line that is no longer
represented and cannot be found on vintage clothing sites!

* The most comprehensive listing of vintage flight jackets can be
found on Vintage Trends, which list over 143 flight jackets (most of
which I linked to in my original answer)

** Please **** look once more at this MA1 flight jacket from Vintage
Trends. This fabric is visibly "ripply" in the front and has a soft
drape from the shoulders!

The MA1 jackets worn by the skinheads and which are still carried on
Vintage clothing sites are commercially made jackets. The softest
material is called "Satin-nylon" and is the type of outer material
used in many of the jackets I referenced. I have found no examples of
a different type of MA1 flight jacket that uses any softer material
other than those that are commercially manufactured with "Satin
nylon."

As you can see from my search strategy, I did do an extensive search
for satin flight jackets, as well as satin jackets of other types,
just to see if I could find anything else "resembling" the jacket you
might have seen. The only other flight or bomber jackets I could find
were made by Luckybrands, and do not seem to be what you are looking
for (they are also quite new):

Here is another example of a Black Bomber jacket with a "satin feel",
but it is made of the same satin-nylon material as those I have shown
you!

Since you have further clarified that the style you saw was definitely
an MA1 flight jacket, and you have not seen any matches even on the
skinhead vintage clothing sites, I can now only assume it was custom
made or a very limited copy that is no longer available.
Again, here is a link to a typical MA1 flight jacket worn by the
skinheads as found on Skinhead World.

Also, I want to reiterate that the MA1 flight jackets do have an outer
shell described as "100% nylon satin, as referenced on the following
site:

I have been searching again, extensively, since you posted your
clarification and have come no closer to finding that perfect jacket
you saw! I have even searched under "silk jackets" and "silk flight
jackets"!

To be sure I am on the right track, I just got off the phone with
Flightjackets.com to ask about the silky material you have mentioned.
They responded that have never known of a commercial flight jacket
manufacturer with a lighter material than the Satin nylon. However,
they are more than willing to make you a custom jacket of any material
you desire.

Flight Jackets.com (as I refereced in my original answer) will make
you a custom made jacket of any fabric or design. You may locate your
own material if you wish, to be sure that it is exactly what you want.
I told them you were trying to locate at a sage-green silky material,
and they assured me they could manufacture a jacket for you of with
that material. However, since jackets of this type of material are not
commercially produced, you must be prepared to pay several hundred
dollars. (The cost would be substantially less on a large order)

Another alternative would be to find a good custom tailor where you
live. I imagine they might make you something for considerably less,
and you could be sure they have the exact design and material.

Where do you reside, and in what country did you see the flight jacket?
