There was a reference in the movie 21 grams relating to a poem. I had
open-heart surgery in May and my memory is sketchy now. Do you know
it? One of the producers/writers appeared on Charlie Rose and may
have referred to this piece as well.

The poem, "La Tierra Giró Para Acercarnos," was written by Eugenio Montejo.

"In his second film, 21 Grams, the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro
González Iñárritu includes a scene where Sean Penn's character
discusses a poem by Eugenio Montejo (Caracas, 1938). The poem that is
quoted is "La tierra giró para acercarnos."

Here you can read the poem in its original Spanish, and also in an
English translation:

Dear PinkFreud:

I don't know if you are correct, but my intuition tells me you are and
I operate on faith. I cannot remember the scene in the movie now.
Having been so close to death, I related to the Sean Penn hospital
scene (numerous tubes and such). He is an exceptional actor and
certainly captured the throes of illness. I will see the movie again
because I do remember I was touched by poem, but am so frustrated
because I do not know who quoted the poem. Again, thank you for your
timely response. I had open-heart surgery in May and understand being
on the heart pump create bubbles in the brain. I may have already had
bubbles, so this is a challenge. I shall overcome!!! My boss speaks
and reads Spanish, thus I was happy to have the Spanish version as
well and eagerly look forward to reading more of this artist's work.
I love this service and cannot wait to ask another question.

A book of Eugenio Montejo's poems and prose translated into
English(including 'The Earth Turned to Bring us Closer') is being
published on the 12th April by Salt Publishing. It is called 'The
Trees' and deals with universal themes of loss, death, family and
love, as well as reflecting on humanity's relationship to nature in an
ever more materialistic and urbanized world.
