I wanted to find out information about laws concerning a persons rights with how they are buried. More specifically, if a US citizen is allowed to be buried without a coffin - and what the regulations about what coffins are allowable are. Also i want to of any other places that allow such burials. As far as I know only cremation and standard burial in a crypt or coffin are options. Thanks. |

In the UK "Burial without a coffin is permitted providing the deceased is suitably wrapped thus causing no offence to the living or indignity to the deceased." http://www.tauntondeane.gov.uk/TDBCSites/CREM/funeral_arr/coffin.asp |

According to the following web sites, burial without a coffin is legal in the United States and is protected by the First Ammendment to the Constitution which guarantees freedom of religion. However, this is dependent on the cemetery in which the body is being interred. http://dimondandsonssbc.com/qanda.mv?show+52 http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/week534/webexclusive.html |
