Question ID: 315193
I have a client whose PC is running XP Home. I set up his My
Documents as an open share on his XP Home PC. I did the same on his
XP Pro PC. Both machines are in the same workgroup and can see each
other over the same router. The XP Home machine can see the XP Pro
machine with no difficulties whatsoever.
However, when I try to browse to the XP Home machine from the XP Pro
machine to the My Documents folder, I get a Permission Denied error.
I've looked and looked all over the XP home PC, and can't seem to
find where I can amend the permissions.
 Any ideas?

Hi pcventures,

Disable any firewalls you have running (your router is taking care of
that job), especially XP's ICF.

Shut off or configure Personal Firewalls:

Let us know how that goes -

Greetings:

The firewall is not enabled on this person's network connection.
Could you suggest something else to look at?
I can see the My Docs folder from the XP Pro machine,
but I can't browse into it, I'm told I don't have permission.

Hi again pcventures,

Okey dokey, three more ideas:

Idea # 1:
Make sure "Simple File Sharing" is enabled:
http://www.petri.co.il/enable_simple_file_sharing_in_windows_xp.htm

Idea # 2:
1. Go to Start, and select Control Panel.
2. Choose User Accounts.
3. Under "Pick an Account to Change" select "Guest Account."
4. If the Guest Account is turned off, click the "Turn on the Guest
Account" button.
5. Select the Guest Account again, and choose "Change the Password"
6. Confirm that the fields are blank.

Idea # 3:
Control Panel / Network Connections /select your connection
Make sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is checked.

Try adding the user account being used on the Home machine to the Pro
machine (same username and password), add do the same from Pro to
Home. Test to see if it works. Thanks.

Make sure you put the folder you want to share into the "Shared Documents" folder
