Hello again, dbdc!
I am sorry I have taken so long on this question. I wanted to be very
careful about compiling referrals since I know you are working hard to
make a positive change in your life.
I have listed a variety of therapy resources for you. Each approach
is somewhat different and you will need to contemplate which avenue
you want to pursue.
* You may want to start with a Referral Service like the New York
Counseling Service (which also covers Northern New Jersey). Please
read the section I have highlighted called "How to Select a
Therapist". The Service attempt to "match clients with
psychotherapists who have experience in the area or areas most
appropriate to the needs of the client. If possible, applicants are
referred to an evaluation interviewer in a geographic location that is
convenient to the applicant."
I have listed several Referral Services first, followed by some
specific treatment facilities.
You also might want to read the following two links about
Psychotherapy and Cognitive Therapy so you have some background
information about each form of treatment before you head off into this
"sea of links"!!!!
Read "About Psychotherapy" by clicking on all the links on the left tab:

REFERRAL SERVICES
******************
NEW YORK COUNSELING SERVICE (Includes New Jersey)
=============================
New Jersey Contact Number: 1-201-265-6229
"The New York Counseling Service originated in Lower Westchester
County, NY and now has offices throughout the New York Metropolitan
Area including Manhattan, Southern Connecticut and Northern New
Jersey. Referrals are made only to professionally trained senior
psychotherapists. Participating psychotherapists are members of one of
three mental health disciplines - Clinical Social Work, Psychiatry, or
Psychology - and all have extensive specialized training and
experience in the application of psychotherapy to emotional,
behavioral and relational problems......"
How to Select a Therapist
-------------------------
"By far the most efficient method of searching for a therapist is to
have a professional assessment done in order to identify the issues
the prospective patient needs to work on and then to obtain a referral
from a professional who knows different therapists and who can make a
selection intended to bring about the best "fit." Even given a
background of extensive training and experience, there are therapists
who work better with certain kinds of people and who do not work well
with certain other kinds of people. We are all "human," after all."
**** "The mission of the New York Counseling Service is to provide an
assessment of the issues a person may be facing and to find a
therapist who is best equipped to provide treatment for that
particular person. Taking into consideration the personalities that
would be involved, the issues the prospective client brings to the
picture and the training and experience of the therapist, a selection
of therapist is made that is intended to maximize the chances of a
successful outcome."
HOW THE SERVICE WORKS
--------------------
"We attempt to match clients with psychotherapists who have experience
in the area or areas most appropriate to the needs of the client. If
possible, applicants are referred to an evaluation interviewer in a
geographic location that is convenient to the applicant. This
interviewer, who is a member of the service, will conduct an initial
diagnostic session after which treatment recommendations are made. If
appropriate, the interviewer will arrange for treatment with another
psychotherapist or with him/her self. Regular session fees are
established between client and therapist. Fees are moderate."

PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTER OF NEW JERSEY
***********************************
1-800-870-5940
"The Psychotherapy Center is the service branch of the Institute for
Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey (IPPNJ). It specializes
in providing high quality individual psychotherapy to adults with a
wide range of personal and emotional difficulties. The Psychotherapy
Center offers contemporary psychoanalytic therapy to people
experiencing various difficulties, and helps these people to make
important and positive changes in their lives."
What is Psychoanalytic Therapy?
-------------------------------
"Psychoanalytic therapy is an in-depth learning experience through
which individuals can make significant and positive changes within
their lives. Therapists listen very carefully and help people to
identify dysfunctional patterns that have hindered their enjoyment and
success in life. We believe that psychological and emotional conflicts
can interfere with daily living and prevent people from realizing
their potential. Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and
relationship problems can be difficult to alleviate without
professional attention. Psychoanalytic therapy fosters emotional
growth and psychological health, which like anything of value takes
time and investment. Many clients have benefited from intensive forms
of psychoanalytic treatment by participating in more than one session
per week."
How to Start
-------------
"After contacting the Center, an initial assessment is made to
determine if our services will meet your individual therapeutic needs.
If the nature of the difficulty can be helped by psychoanalytic
therapy, then a therapist will be assigned. Fees and scheduling
arrangements are made with your therapist during the first
consultation session."

Treatment
----------
"Because our staff has been trained in so many different methods, we
can help you formulate a unique treatment plan where your goals are
clear and attainable. Then, you and your therapist together develop a
multi-faceted strategy to achieve them."
"Sometimes the "first-line" treatment for a particular problem
involves a combination of therapy and other health treatment. We will
collaborate with other competent professionals in related fields if
necessary- our goal is to provide you with the most comprehensive
treatment, tailored to suit your needs."
"In fact, we are more progressive than most psychotherapists in this
kind of collaboration. For example, we were one of the first group
practices in New Jersey to affiliate with psychopharmacologists, even
before the advent of Prozac and the "new breed" of antidepressants. If
you might benefit from a medication evaluation, we can refer to you to
psychiatrists and clinical nurse practitioners with whom we work
closely. Similarly, we work with alternative health care
practitioners, with internists and other M.D.'s, and often can suggest
yoga centers, meditation teachers, or nutritionists."

Williamson, R.N, our Assistant Director. Debbie has held this position
for nearly a decade, and shepherded thousands of people in distress

Debbie, in person or on the phone, immediately feels her welcoming

concern for the suffering of others. Debbie and you will explore your
reasons for seeking help so that she can match you with the therapist
who will best suit your needs. Your own preferences will be respected
as well: if you would feel more comfortable with a male or female
therapist..."

* This approach seems so helpful that it would be worth your while to
call and see if they can recommend a therapist closer to you.
"Cognitive Therapy Associates (CTA) is a network of highly skilled,
affiliated therapists (licensed psychologists and social workers) who
all use a therapeutic approach called Cognitive Therapy, or Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This kind of therapy has been demonstrated
by clinical studies to be the most effective treatment for a variety
of psychological difficulties: depression, anxiety/stress, panic, OCD,
phobias, low self esteem, eating disorders, relationship problems, and
more. The success of this therapy in clinical practice is rapidly
increasing CBT's popularity as the treatment of choice for those who
are seeking therapy."
"The clinical director and founder of CTA is Allison Conner, Psy.D.
Dr. Conner has been in practice since 1993, and she specializes in
using both the standard Cognitive Therapy model as well as the
Schema-Focused approach to treatment. In addition to managing the
network of CTA therapists, Dr. Conner provides both individual and
couples therapy in her Manhattan office, which is located near Lincoln
Center."
"To learn how therapy can help you or to schedule an appointment,
please call us at (212) 258-2577. Dr. Allison Conner will ask you
about your treatment needs and goals during a brief phone interview,
and match you with a qualified CTA therapist in your area that is
right for you. Then, your therapist will promptly contact you so that
you can get started."

Schema-Focused Cognitive Therapy
---------------------------------
"The schemas that are targeted in treatment are enduring and
self-defeating patterns that typically begin early in life. These
patterns consist of negative/dysfunctional thoughts and feelings, have
been repeated and elaborated upon, and pose obstacles for
accomplishing one's goals and getting one's needs met. Some examples
of schema beliefs are: "I'm unlovable," "I?m a failure," "People don't
care about me," "I?m not important," .......
"Although schemas are usually developed early in life (during
childhood or adolescence), they can also form later, in adulthood.
These schemas are perpetuated behaviorally through the coping styles
of schema maintenance, schema avoidance, and schema compensation. The
Schema-Focused model of treatment is designed to help the person to
break these negative patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, which
are often very tenacious, and to develop healthier alternatives to
replace them."
"The Schema-Focused approach combines the best aspects of
cognitive-behavioral, experiential, interpersonal and psychoanalytic
therapies into one unified model of treatment. Schema-Focused Therapy
has shown remarkable results in helping people to change patterns
which they have lived with for a long time, even when other methods
and efforts they have tried before have been unsuccessful."

What is cognitive therapy?
--------------------------
"Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a relatively short-term, focused
psychotherapy for a wide range of psychological problems including
depression, anxiety, anger, marital conflict, loneliness, panic,
fears, eating disorders, substance abuse, and personality problems.
The focus of therapy is on how you are thinking, behaving, and
communicating today rather than on your early childhood experiences."
Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.cognitivetherapynyc.com/faq.asp
Aren't my problems due to my childhood experiences?
-----------------------------------------------------
"Part of your problem may be due to how your parents, siblings and
peers treated you, but your solution to your problem is what you are
thinking and doing today. However, with many people we do find it
useful at times to review the source of your problems and help you
learn how to change the way you think about it now."
Aren't my problems due to biochemistry?
--------------------------------------
"Part of your problems may be due to biochemistry, but there are many
factors---such as the way you think, behave, relate and current and
past life-events---that are important. Using cognitive-behavioral
therapy does not preclude the use of medication. For most psychiatric
disorders, there is considerable evidence that cognitive-behavioral
therapy is as effective as medication. For very serious levels of
depression and anxiety, we believe that it might be best to combine
medication with therapy. An advantage of cognitive-behavioral therapy
is that you also learn ways to solve your problems on your own."

I know I have given you a lot to chew on. It may, in fact, seem
overwhelming. However, if you find a certain treatment approach you
like, or a facility that seems particulary friendly, you should start
there. You should feel perfectly free to make phone calls to each
facility, asking with utmost candor about therapists who have
experience dealing with adults who have faced similar issues as your
own. If they are hesitant...go elsewhere! You should be able to get a
good feeling for which facility will offer the most help.
Most facilities will offer a free, initial telephone consultation to
determine if you can find the right fit. Don't be shy about using that
option. You are the paying customer and it is perfectly within your
rights to find out about the therapists on staff so you can make a
good selection. And.....if you meet with someone and you don't
click...go elsewhere!
I wish you the very best of luck as you venture forth. I admire your
willingness to take positive steps foward and will be thinking of you!
Sincerely,
umiat
