What kind of "facilities" are you looking for? The only necessities for breastfeeding are a hungry child and a lactating mother. In my experience, some restaurants have booths with the table too close to the bench for my wife's comfort, so we've had to move to a table, but that's about the extent of problems with infrastructure in North America. |

Hi there, My sister, who lives in Leeds, has never had problems with breastfeeding in cafes and restaurants there. Have you (or your partner) had problems before? There's no law against discreet breastfeeding in public in the UK, and squeamishness about these things seems definitely to be on the wane. If there are any places you'd especially like to go to, and you're nervous about it, just ring them up to make sure that they're comfortable about it. grimace |

If you are asking which venues have separate rooms for the purpose, I very much doubt that you will find many. Probably your best bet is supermarkets with a separate baby change room, since these sometimes include seating and so can be used for breastfeeding. Unfortunately, central York itself does not have that many supermarkets. I found some information, which although it relates to a shopping centre in Croydon, does indicate the policy of chain stores on breastfeeding. Therefore, it might indicate shops which are worth investigating in York: http://www.croydon.gov.uk/images/00254_Breast_Feeding.pdf However, if your interest is more in which places are happy about mothers breastfeeding in public, it might be worth contacting the local contacts for the National Childbirth Trust and the La Leche League to ask whether they know of places which are either tolerant or intolerant (ie to avoid) of breastfeeding (La Leche N. Yorks contact is Louise - 01765 658683, NCT does not provide a York contact on the web site, but their enquiry line for contacts is 0870 444 8707). York City Council did have a guide to "child-friendly York", but this is no longer on their website. Instead, they refer to a new guide being prepared by the NCT supposedly for release this summer. |
