Greatly apreciate your patience with this diagnostic process, t_lockwo-ga.

Do you get any type of error message when you try to run "Age of Empires,"
such as "Invalid Page Fault in Kernel32.dll," etc.?

Also, have you updated "Age of Empires" to version 1.0c with the following
patch from Microsoft?
http://download.microsoft.com/download/aoe/Patch/1.0c/W9X/EN-US/AOEPATCH.exe

Thanks! denco-ga

Sorry, Thanks for your patience.

No, I do not get an error. When I try to execute the game, I is
strange, windows seems to run it in the background as I can get sound
in the background but can not see the game. Could this new program
updated a dll or directx program that I need. If I could completely
erase xp and reinstall that, possible that would help-I am not sure
how to format the disk (I do not know how to Fdisk in XP).

Thanks

Howdy t_lockwo-ga,

Glad we found a fix to your problem.

Lots of times when a program stops working, it is because a needed file
got replaced or some settings got changed. Unfortunately, even when the
program that did the damage is removed, the replaced file or changed
settings sometimes doesn't get restored.

Sometimes, an update of a program will restore those missing files or
update the settings, and since Microsoft had an update, it was worth
trying to see if it would fix the problem. The "Age of Empires" update
page is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=21eb4603-7daa-455c-943c-e5775ceb3c59

"Microsoft Age of Empires Update 1.0c is an upgrade of Age of Empires 1.0
that includes the 1.0a and 1.0b patches ..."

The actual patch can be downloaded here.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/aoe/Patch/1.0c/W9X/EN-US/AOEPATCH.exe

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.
