I found my grandmother, Helen Tubbert(s), in the 1920 New York Census
as being in the Hudson School for girls. What kind of school is it and
how do I find records for her. Will I be able to get copies of her

Dear joyjeep50,

The correct official name of the Hudson School for Girls was "State
Training School for Girls", formerly "House of Refuge for Women at
Hudson". This institution was established in 1887 as a state
reformatory; young women aged between 15 and 30 were sent to Hudson
with convictions for petit larceny. In 1904, the House of Refuge for
Women was renamed "State Training School for Girls" and placed under
the auspices of the state Department of Social Services; now, girls
aged 11 to 15 were sent there, mainly for the same reasons as women
before, and also for acts that were criminal only by virtue of the
girl's status as a minor. In 1931, the school was transferred to the
state Education Department, and in 1971 to the Division for Youth
(DFY). In 1975, the institution was closed because the buildings were
ruinous. After renovation, it was re-opened in 1976, now named "Hudson
Correctional Facility", under the jurisdiction of the Department of
Correctional Services, the state's adult correctional system.

All existing historical records of the Hudson School are stored at the
New York State Archives. However, the NYS Archives say explicitly that
such material is generally far from complete. The records are filed
under the archive call number 10706, "Administrative records and case
files from state institutions for youth, 1887-1977", Subseries 1. The
records are available to the public, with the exception of some
records less than 75 years old which are restricted to protect
personal privacy. Use only after review by archivist. Summary
descriptions of records within subseries are available as finding
aids.
